The Sustainable Development Practice Group front office includes an Office of the Chief Economist. The major functions of this Office are to support knowledge intensive activities in the Sustainable Development Practice Group, undertake research, promote collaboration and to liaise with the academic community. It seeks to empower teams with knowledge and information to deliver the best global advice to client countries. To deliver on its wide mandate the Office is seeking to hire an Economist (ETC) with outstanding analytical skills in core areas of Sustainable Development as described below and with excellent skills in economic data analysis and writing policy documents.

The Economist is expected to have strong expertise in empirical Environmental and Natural Resource Economics. Specifically, the Economist will assist the team’s work on the nexus between environmental degradation, and social exclusion and inequalities. The analytical work program will include economic data analysis, the drafting of technical and policy reports, as well as providing support to corporate and Practice Group functions. She/he will report to the Chief Economist.

Roles & Responsibilities:

• Develop and contribute to high-profile and technically advanced reports, that include developing state-of-the-art approaches in applied economic analysis and econometrics as it relates to environmental economics; • Contribute to a range of high-quality policy notes and technical research papers as requested; • Assist in the development and use of applied diagnostic tools and approaches for evidence-based assessments that could influence operational interventions; • Provide cross-support to regions and country teams in analyzing sustainability related challenges; • Assist in the other tasks such as activities for the community of practice for Economists, BBLs, learning clinics, etc;

Selection Criteria

• PhD in the Economics of Environment, Natural Resources, or Energy; • Strong quantitative skills, in particular experience with compiling and analyzing large micro and geospatial datasets; • Strong knowledge of advanced econometrics and data science methods, including panel data econometrics, time series analysis, and machine learning; • Strong writing skills, as evidenced from previous publications, including technical papers and policy reports; • Strong oral communication skills, including the ability to present complex analyses to non-specialist audiences; • Ability to work flexibly on a range of assignments and adjust to a variety of complex evolving tasks to meet deadlines.

Required Competencies

Deep Knowledge of General Economics combined with Outstanding Analytical Skills - Intellectual leadership and an ability to apply economic and econometric tools to problems of sustainability.

Deep Knowledge of the Economics of the Environment, Natural Resources, or Energy – With evidence of experience in preparing reports, advocacy papers, technical reviews, publications and dissertation chapters.

Outstanding Written and Verbal Communication Skills - A strong command of all forms of communication and delivers messages in a consistently effective, timely and engaging manner.
