The Macroeconomics, Trade, and Investment (MTI) MENA unit covers work in 25 countries within the region.

This position pertains to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) which includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The ET consultant would support the MTI team of economists working on the GCC countries to assist with a number of deliverables including regular macro-monitoring of these six GCC countries involving monthly and quarterly monitoring as well as bi-annual Gulf Economic Monitors and Macro-Poverty Outlooks. It also includes economic forecasting through the MFMOD model. The Consultant would also support MTI economists in preparing analytical reports through Reimbursable Advisory Services which are carried out on demand basis.

In addition, the Consultant would support MTI economists focused on the Mashreq countries, and specifically Lebanon, where the team is working on preparing a comprehensive Systematic Country Diagnostic. Systematic Country Diagnostic reports are prepared by World Bank Group staff in close consultation with national authorities and other stakeholders. The SCD is a diagnostic exercise to identify key challenges and opportunities for a country to accelerate progress towards development objectives that are consistent with the twin goals of ending absolute poverty and boosting shared prosperity in a sustainable manner.

Duties and Accountabilities

As part of the MTI team, your responsibilities will be the following:

- The preparation of Macro-Poverty Outlook briefs (MPOs), and associated macro-projections using the MFMod, for GCC countries as needed. - The development and maintenance of macro and fiscal databases on each of the six GCC countries and short monthly reports on the key developments in the GCC region. - Support the bi-annual Gulf Economic Update through data work (drawing on the monthly database, and the previous editions of the Updater) as well as original research and data analysis, including econometrics analysis, as required. - Support the Reimbursable Advisory Services as needed, especially for Saudi Arabia. - Preparation of ad-hoc GCC country briefs and country cards. - Support the team in preparing the Systematic Country Diagnostic for Lebanon. - Participate actively in the MTI-wide activities.

Selection Criteria

- Minimum of a Master’s degree (Ph.D. preferred) in economics or public policy with at least two to three years of relevant professional experience including a track record of delivery of high quality analytical and advisory products. - The ETC will be well versed in (and demonstrated ability in) carrying out high-quality macro monitoring work and analysis. - Experience in working with the World Bank and IMF, or other institution in a macro-monitoring capacity. - Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present complicated analyses to non-specialists. - Ability to work flexibly on a range of assignments and adjust to a variety of complex evolving tasks to meet deadlines.

Required Competencies

- Macroeconomic Skills – Strong macroeconomic skills supported by quantitative skills. - Analytical Skills – Proficiency in Stata and MFMOD.
