ROLE PURPOSE:

The role holder is required to transport passengers, assets and commodities safely to the desired destination following SCI policies and procedures.

In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Drive / Ride SC’s vehicles/hired vehicles as per requirements and ensure that all goods, documents and personnel in the vehicle reach their destination safely.
  • Carry out routine maintenance and repair of SCI’s vehicles and promptly report to the Line Manager, all repairs that need to be affected and ensure that SCI’s vehicles are in good running condition at all times;
  • Prior to the commencement of the journey, check and ensure that vehicle is in a good running condition and that all the necessary tool kits, first aid kits, fire extinguisher and other safety equipment are in place;
  • Undertake the delivery of letters and posting of letters as and when requested by the relevant officers;
  • Accurately maintain the running charts, vehicle log sheets and, fuel consumption, mileage, etc. and other vehicle documentation and ensure that all vehicle usage is appropriately authorized and documented;
  • Ensure that the vehicles assigned are washed and cleaned regularly and the air pressure, battery water etc are checked regularly;
  • In the event of an accident ensure that the proper procedures and precautions are taken care of and SCI’s interests are protected, and any injured personnel are taken care of. This includes obtaining the necessary documentation, police reports for insurance and record purposes;
  • Monitoring and reporting of, and taking actions, including visiting the garage and inspecting progress, on routine maintenance and repair of SCI vehicles and ensuring safety and good running conditions of vehicles at all times.
  • Keeping abreast with most updated information on government traffic rules and regulations
  • Safety and security of staff, and ensure all SCI policies and principles are upheld
  • Providing require support promptly, at scale and in line with the rules and principles during emergencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of G.C.E Ordinary Level qualification
  • Possess a valid heavy vehicle driving and motorbike riding licence.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Essential

  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive driving experience
  • Prior experience as a driver in an international NGO, UN agency or private company
  • Fluent in Sinhala and/or Tamil and ability to communicate in English desirable
  • Availability and willingness to work extra hours and travel out of the working location.
  • Behave and demonstrates high level of courtesy, honesty, encourages openness and transparency.
  • The capacity and willingness to be flexible and accommodating in difficult and sometimes insecure working circumstances.

Desirable

  • Ability and willingness to carry out basic repairs and maintenance to the vehicles;
  • Knowledge and licence to ride three wheelers are desirable;
