Organizational Setting

FAO Gambia and partners are implementing the Supporting Cross-Border Cooperation for Increased Community Resilience and Social Cohesion in The Gambia and Senegal Project. The project aims to address key challenges that cause instability and insecurity in the border regions; these include land use practices, effects of climate change as well weak border management coupled with long, remote and porous borders. Proposed outcomes include enhanced natural resource management through a community-based participatory approach and improved community resilience through the promotion of inclusive dialogue processes and support for alternative green livelihoods.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative in The Gambia, the AFAOR-Administration, the National Project Coordinator, and with guidance from Administrative and Operations associates, the driver will provide safe driving services to the FAO Country Office and contribute towards the implementation of the project and programmes.

Technical Focus

In his/her function as Project Driver, the incumbent is in regular contact with staff from all levels of the project, the country office, with national and international visitors, with project managers, consultants and other personnel outside the Organization. He/she interacts on a day-to-day basis with personnel and officials from local offices and service providers.

Tasks and responsibilities

• Drive the PBF project vehicle for the transport of authorized personnel, materials and equipment to designated locations for project activities. • Provide project staff and personnel with office transportation, collect and deliver mail, documents, and other items, as requested by supervisor. • Provide transportation to field-based locations as requested by the supervisor, emergency transportation needs may arise. • Ensure that project vehicles comply with licensing and traffic department regulations. • Log official trips, daily mileage, gas consumption, oil changes and greasing. • Keep the assigned vehicle clean, safe and technically sound at all times. • Schedule vehicle maintenance and repairs and maintain vehicle supplies in collaboration with the relevant staf. • Perform preventative maintenance such as maintaining proper fuel, oil, water levels and pressures; attend to minor repair requirements and co-ordinates procurement of parts or supplies; verifies completion of major repairs and oversees major repair works to vehicles • Ensure that supervisor is alerted with reports of issues of vehicles and deficiencies in a timely manner when larger repairs are required. • Follow all policies, rules and regulations in relation to the management of vehicles at FAO. • Maintain communication with the Administrative Assistant for transportation arrangements for the Project Implementation Unit. • Ensure that in case of an accident, all organizational and national rules, regulations and procedures are followed correctly. • Perform any other related duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• Secondary School Education • Possession of a valid driver’s license • Two years’ experience as a driver • Safe driving record • Working knowledge (proficient – level C) of English

Technical/Functional Skills

• Good knowledge of local driving rules and regulations; skills in minor vehicle repair • Work experience with UN Agencies is an asset • A high degree of punctuality and reliability • Safe driving manner and records; good sense of direction and local conditions • Ability to cope with extended working hours • Possess a basic understanding of the operation and maintenance of vehicles
