UNOPS in Sri Lanka is based in Colombo and is responsible for helping the Government of Sri Lanka and partner organizations deliver social and economic rehabilitation in areas affected by the 2004 tsunami and decades of armed conflict. UNOPS in Sri Lanka helps partners achieve their project goals in sectors including physical infrastructure, the environment and poverty mitigation. UNOPS has supported Sri Lanka’s development since 1998, expanding operations in 2005 to support the post-tsunami response and reconstruction process. Within the organization’s mandate in project management, infrastructure, and procurement, UNOPS Sri Lanka implements customized socio-economic development projects that benefit vulnerable people and develop national capacities. Achievements in Sri Lanka include the development of sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure, procurement services & capacity building, and project management in education, fisheries, roads, health, water supply systems; flood control and sanitation, and integrated solid waste management sectors. UNOPS works closely with Government counterparts and communities to ensure increased ownership, sustainability, and accountability of Projects.

UNOPS Sri Lanka facilitated over $22 million worth of procurement of COVID-19 protection equipment and services in partnership with the World Bank, the Government of Japan, and the United Nations Multi-Partner Trust Fund. Currently, UNOPS is conducting about $5 million pharmaceutical procurement to strengthen the Sri Lanka health system and support the people in need.

Background Information - Job-specific

Under the guidance and supervision of the Project Manager as direct supervisor, the Driver provides reliable and safe driving services for the transport of authorized personnel. The Driver has a high sense of responsibility for his duties, courtesy, tact and the ability to engage sensibly with local communities, people of different national and cultural backgrounds.

This position is located in Colombo, Sri Lanka with frequent travels outside Colombo Within limits of delegated authority and depending location, a Driver at this level may be responsible for the following duties.

Functional Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions: 1. Provision of reliable and secure driving services 2. Proper use of vehicle 3. Day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle 4. Availability of documents/ supplies 5. Immediate action in case of accident

1. Provides reliable and secure driving services by,

a) driving vehicles safely for the transport of authorized personnel;

b) collecting and delivering mail, documents and other items; and

c) meeting official personnel at the airport and facilitating immigration and customs formalities as required.

2. Ensures proper use of vehicle through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs,provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports.

3. Ensures the day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle by checking oil, water, battery, brakes, tries, etc.; performing minor repairs and arranging for major repairs; and ensuring that the vehicle is kept clean.

4. Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, necessary spare parts.

5. Ensures that immediate steps as required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in an accident.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education

  • Completion of secondary school or equivalent.

    License

  • Drivers training with a valid driver’s license.

Work experience - Two years work experience as a driver; safe driving record. - Knowledge of driving rules and regulations and skills in minor vehicle repairs.

  • Previous driving experience in Western province is required.
  • Should be able to furnish a valid police report which should be submitted within 7 days after assignment.

    Language requirements

  • Fluency in written and oral English required.

  • Fluency in Sinhalese is required.

Contract type, level and duration

Contract type: ICA Contract level: Local ICA Support 2 (LICA 2 / ICSC 2) Contract duration: Open-ended, subject to organizational requirements, availability of funds and satisfactory performance.
