Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. This position is located in the UN-Habitat Regional Office for Africa (ROAF), Nairobi Kenya. The Driver is based in Mombasa, Kenya and reports to the Project Manager and Programme Management Officer, UN-Habitat, as the First Reporting Officer and the Second Reporting Officer respectively.

Within delegated authority, the Driver will be responsible for the following duties:

Responsibilities - Supports all travels to project sites and relevant meetings undertaken by all project staff and relevant partners. - Coordinates, if needed, travels with other Implementing Partners. - Keeps the project vehicle in pristine working order, and manages all associated maintenance and repairs accordingly. - Keeps expenses and accounts related to the project vehicle in order, for regular reviews by the Project Manager (P-4), and Programme Management Officer, and National Officers in the Project - Provision of reliable and secure driving services - Proper use of vehicle - Day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle - Immediate action in case of accident

Work implies frequent interaction with the following: - Staff within ROAF; - Human resource, administrative, accounting staff in missions/field and Headquarters. - Counterparts in other UN agencies. - Staff in the Department of Management.

Results Expected: - The Driver provides reliable and safe driving services for the transport of authorized personnel. - The Driver has a client-oriented approach, high sense of responsibility, courtesy, tact and the ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. - Provides reliable and secure driving services by; a) Driving vehicles safely for the transport of authorized personnel and, in the case of missions, for the transport of cargo goods and/or hazardous goods vehicles; b) Collecting and delivering mail, documents and other items; and c) Meeting official personnel at the airport and facilitating immigration and customs formalities as required. - Ensures proper use of vehicle through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports. - Ensures the day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle by checking oil, water, battery, brakes, tries, etc.; performing minor repairs and arranging for major repairs; and ensuring that the vehicle is kept clean. - Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, necessary spare parts. - Ensures that immediate steps as required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in an accident. - Monitoring and Progress Controls - The key results have an impact on the accurate, safe and timely execution of the UN-Habitat services.

Education Completion of secondary school or equivalent is required. Drivers training with a valid driver’s license is required.

Work Experience A minimum of one (1) year progressively responsible experience as a driver with a safe driving record is required.

Experience in driving and vehicle maintenance is required.

Experience with an NGO or the United Nations is desirable.

Experience in first aid training is desirable.

Languages Fluency in written and oral English and Swahili languages is required. Knowledge of second UN working language desirable.

NOTE: 'Fluency' equals a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas (speak, read, write and understand) and 'Knowledge of' equals a rating of 'confident' in two of the four areas.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice This is a project post. This position is open for recruitment for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension. Staff members are subject to the authority of the SecretaryGeneral and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
