Background Information – Project

The UNMISS Transport Section, under Service Delivery, plays a vital role in ensuring the Mission meets its mandate through facilitating staff movement across and staff access to the mission’s various operational bases by providing vehicles, passenger buses and specialized equipment which are in optimal condition. UNMISS engages UNOPS to provide services specific to dispatch and shuttle services and repair, maintenance and recovery services including onsite repairs and maintenance of UNMISS heavy-duty vehicles, passenger buses and specialized equipment within its heavy workshop. There is significant value added for UNMISS to outsource the driving services segment to UNOPS, given the synergies between the two organizations, including shared UN values.

UNOPS has “the potential for value-adding contributions that [it] can make in providing efficient, cost-effective services to partners in the areas of project management, human resources, financial management and common/shared services”. UNOPS has the mandate, core expertise and experience in peacekeeping and post-conflict contexts, project management, procurement, and sourcing, in the most challenging environments around the world, and well-established operational resources in South Sudan, Somalia, Kenya and nearby countries. Moreover, UNOPS shares the same UN Values and is committed to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and national capacity building for a peaceful and positive future for South Sudan.

Functional Responsibilities

Under the guidance and supervision of the Project Management Support Officer, the Driver provides reliable and safe driving services to the UNMISS personnel and visitors, ensuring highest standards of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility, excellent knowledge of protocol and security issues. The Driver has a client-oriented approach, high sense of responsibility, courtesy, tact and the ability to work with people of different nationalities and cultural backgrounds.

Summary of Key Functions:

  • Provision of reliable and secure driving services;
  • Proper use of vehicle;
  • Day-to-day maintenance and cleaning of the assigned vehicle;
  • Availability of documents/ supplies;
  • Immediate action in case of accident.
  1. Provides reliable and secure driving services by a) driving vehicles for UNMISS b) collecting and delivering mail, documents and other items;

  2. Ensures proper use of vehicles through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports;

  3. Ensures the day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle by checking oil, water, battery, brakes, tyre, etc.; performing minor repairs and arranging for major repairs; and ensuring that the vehicle is kept clean;

  4. Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, necessary spare parts;

  5. Ensures that immediate steps as required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in an accident.

Impact of Results:- The key results have an impact on the accurate, safe and timely execution of the UNOPS services.

Education

Secondary school certificate or high school certificate/diploma; Drivers training with a valid driver's license.

Experience

Two years’ work experience as a driver;

Skills in minor vehicle repairs are an asset;

Experience working with NGO and or the UN is an added advantage.
