The Mexico Country Office offers significant opportunities for partnership development with and fundraising among major donors and private/institutional foundations. It is estimated that 14% of billionaires in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region are concentrated in Mexico. In addition, there have been significant partnership and financial opportunities identified within Mexico's audience of UNICEF's Private Sector Plan.

Join our team if you would like to help drive strategic growth for the philanthropy channel in Mexico, focusing on Foundations while promoting cross-collaboration with the Major Donor's specialists’ joint opportunities.

How can you make a difference?

The Philanthropy Officer will support the implementation and development of the philanthropy strategy for the Mexico Country office, which will support UNICEF's mission and contribute to UNICEF's local, regional, and global funding needs.

Under the leadership of the Fund-Raising Specialist (NO-3) in Mexico, the post holder will carry out the following responsibilities:

  1. Support the implementation of the philanthropy strategy and work plan in Mexico to achieve established goals and KPIs.

  2. Identify and lead the relationship development with strategic Foundation opportunities/prospects focusing on: top Mexican Foundations and those with binational operations in the United States and Mexico with the ability to make gifts of at least US$100,000 and with the potential to grow their contributions to the US$1M+ level.

  3. Develop and mobilize new strategic funding opportunities and offerings with the philanthropic sector with a focus on foundations.

  4. Renew and nurture any ongoing philanthropic partnerships. Promote cross-functional coordination and collaboration with Corporate and Individuals Fundraising teams, Child Rights and Business, Marketing Services, and Programme staff.

  5. Maintain a positive and collaborative working relationship with partners.

Key Accountabilities, duties, and tasks

  1. Prospect Identification
  • Support Mexico’s participation in the regional market feasibility study and on that basis refresh the Foundations landscape analysis for Mexican Foundation and those with a bi-national presence in Mexico and the USA.
  • Develop high value and realistic prospect list for Institutional Foundations and map connections/opportunities for collaboration with existing major donor prospect/partner list.
  • Map local events that could contribute to the development of the philanthropy strategy in UNICEF Mexico and organize at least one prospecting/cultivation philanthropy event per year locally.
  • Support engagement of prospects for UNICEF Mexico in regional and global initiatives
  1. Cultivate and mobilize new strategic funding opportunities with the philanthropic sector:
  • Takeccountability for effective engagement of designated priority foundations, contributing to the realization of Mexico’s income targets.
  • Develop and action cultivation plans for partner and prospect foundation participation in UNICEF-led and external events.
  • Coordinate and liaise with partner UNICEF NatComs on join opportunities with Foundations
  • Develop and review funding proposals, concept notes, fundraising brief, proposals, and other products as relevant; Maintain donor proposal tracking sheet and follow up on pledged funding.
  • Provide regular summaries of urgent funding needs for both the humanitarian and development programme consolidated for the office across all programme sections.
  • Support the development of MoUs/ contractual process with the partner
  1. Philanthropic Partnership Relationship Management
  • Lead and support relationship management activities for foundation partnerships and others as required ensuring quality and timely reporting.
  1. Philanthropy networks and convening events
  • Map local events that could contribute to the development of the philanthropy strategy in UNICEF Mexico and organize at least one prospecting/cultivation philanthropy event per year locally.
  • Support engagement of prospects for UNICEF Mexico in regional and global initiatives.
  • Facilitate the organization of UNICEF participation in foundation/philanthropy networks, and help to organize thematic roundtables and convening events, with a view to adding UNICEF’s voice, expertise and thematic content to the global dialogue on issues affecting children.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

The following required education, experience and languages:

  • A university degree in one of the following fields: Business and Administration, Marketing, International Relations, Public Administration, or another relevant technical field.
  • A minimum of one year of relevant professional work experience in philanthropic fundraising.
  • Fluency in Spanish.
  • A proficient level of English, although complete fluency is preferred. If the person hired is not fluent, he/she will have to commit to improving their English skills in the first six/twelve months of work.

Additionally, you may have the following experience, but please note that it is not mandatory, it is rather an asset:

  • Proven experience for three years or more in the acquisition of philanthropy gifts (Foundations or Major donors) and development of private sector partnerships.
