Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager of the Governance for Resilience and Sustainability Project (GRSP) and in close collaboration with other technical staff under GRSP and the Sustainable and Inclusive Growth Unit (SIGU), the UN Youth Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

• Support the project manager and other technical staff in GRSP in the implementation of project activities with a focus on ensuring synergies between COVID-19 recovery programming, disaster risk preparedness and building community resilience as enunciated in Pillar 3 and Pillar of the UN COVID-19 socio economic response framework

• Support provisions of technical inputs in areas related to disaster risk reduction linked to COVID-19 resilience building programming, including supporting formulation of preparatory notes, power points presentations, briefing, etc.

• Support integration of DRR considerations into organization’s and relevant policy documents

• Supporting the project’s communications initiatives, including drafting short articles/feeds for UNDP’s website and other outlets, and production of fact sheets and other products on project activities.
• Promote communication, information sharing, and coordination between GRSP, SIGU and other UNDP projects
• Assisting the project manager in monitoring & evaluation functions, including: monitoring of GRSP project activities, gathering and analysing data (including through field trips, if needed), supporting surveys and studies, and supporting periodic reporting on project activities following organization’s standards.

• Contribute to inter-agency and multi-stakeholders collaboration supporting coordination mechanisms in the area of DRR, CC and environmental governance while substantively supporting the Pillar 5 and Pillar 3 working groups set up to monitor implementation of the COVID-19 socio-economic response framework

• Provide support to the organization of awareness raising campaign and events, in the area volunteerism, DRR and environmental governance

• Provide administrative and logistical support to the organisation of meetings, workshops, events, conferences, field trips, etc.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

A university degree related to Social Science, Development Studies, Environmental Science, Disaster Risk Management, International Relations, Urban planning or any related areas.

Required experience:

Experience remark:

• • Demonstrated interest and knowledge in issues related disaster risk reduction, resilience building, climate change and environmental sustainability.
• Up to 2 years’ experience in areas related to development cooperation. Previous experience in multicultural contexts and in developing countries will be highly considered.

• Good English communication and writing skills.

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office software package (MS Word, Excel, Access etc.). Knowledge of data visualization tools will be an advantage.

• Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;

Learning Expectations

Learning and development are a central part of the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment and take place before, during and after his or her assignment in the field. Ideally, offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aim to strengthen the volunteer’s skills and competences, improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteer’s motivation high.

Learning elements for the UN Youth Volunteer include the development of:

• Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management, problem solving, team building; and career preparedness such as interview skills, CV preparation, job searching.
• Inter-personal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural awareness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management.
• Volunteering-related skills: including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation.

Beyond the learning opportunities provided by UNV, the host agency will support knowledge and capacity development in the technical areas that are relevant to the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment. The host agency will provide, at its expense, UN Youth Volunteers with equal opportunity to participate in training courses and workshops offered to its personnel.
