Duties and Responsibilities **THIS IS A NATIONAL LEVEL CONSULTANCY AND OPEN FOR IRANIAN NATIONALS ONLY.**

The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asia and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership with policy-oriented research and analysis, normative support and technical assistance and capacity building, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.

The Asian and Pacific Centre for the Development of Disaster Information Management (APDIM) aims to reduce the negative impact of natural hazards, strengthen capacities for disaster information management and enhance regional cooperation and coordination in disaster risk reduction.

The consultant will contribute to the programme of work of APDIM under the direct supervision of the Programme Officer, and the overall supervision of the Senior Coordinator of APDIM. This position is located in the Asian and Pacific Centre for the Development of Disaster Information Management (APDIM), Tehran, the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Main Tasks and Deliverables:

  • Carries out research on selected aspects of programmes, operations and other activities on multi-hazard information, including collecting, analyzing and presenting statistical data and other information gathered from diverse sources.
  • Substantial contribution to analytical work planned in 2023 including Sand and Dust Storms Impact-based forecasting, Risk Data Governance in Asia and the Pacific, Integrating DRR in National Development Plans, and the Implementation of Sand and Dust Storms Regional Action Plan in Asia and the Pacific.
  • Contributing to the consulting assignments in disaster risk reduction by planning and facilitating workshops, expert group meetings, intergovernmental meetings, etc.
  • Contributes to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, and inputs to publications, on disaster information management and disaster risk reduction.
  • Provides substantive input to consultative and other meetings, and conferences, including proposing agenda topics, identifying and proposing participants, preparation of background documents and presentations, etc.
  • Performs other duties as required.

    Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications:

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in economics, environment, disaster management or other related fields. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

  • A minimum of two years of experience in the field of research in economics, disaster risk reduction, environment, climate change or related areas.

  • Experience in working in a multicultural environment is an asset.

  • Experience in meteorological hazards early warning system is an asset.

  • Knowledge of working with GIS software is an asset.

    Languages Proficiency in English and Farsi both written and oral, is required.
