Overview

Assist with disaster risk reduction efforts and support program management activities.

You have:

• Candidate age: between 18 and 29 throughout the entire duration of their assignment.
• Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment.
• Candidates must be students of any academic program (BA/BSc, Masters, PhD) and keep this status during the whole period of the volunteer assignment.
• 0-2 years of experience.
• Fluent in English.
• Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in disaster risk management, climate change adaptation, humanitarian action, food security, sustainable development, environmental management, international relations.
• Computer skills (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, and others).

Contract

This is a UNV National University contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National University contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer - Risk Knowledge, the National University UNV will:

• Support the development of the IGAD regional flood risk assessment for early warning and earliy action. Tasks will include, among other: supporting the coordination among partners, participation in meetings, keeping of meeting minutes, supporting communication across stakeholders from IGAD Member States involved in the project, collating inputs from different project stakeholders, providing independent technical input of the development of the risk profile, supporting with analysis for the regional risk assessment, contributing input for work linking the risk assessment with the assessment for food security, supporting work on trans-boundary risk assessment;
• Assist in the process of integrating knowledge product(s) developed through the HoA Partnership into ICPAC’s existing analytical work and decision-making processes: participating in meetings, supporting with the development of the overview, contributing to the drafting of reports.
• Contribute to the consolidation and systematization of existing data sources and risk information available across the region to render more efficient the production of risk knowledge and its effective use: contributing to the planned online research, supporting the verification of data sources, contributing technical opinion on proposed solutions.
• Assist with the organisation and running of consultations and capacity development workshops in support of the above activities and for peer exchange: participating in meetings and supporting with the drafting of minutes and meeting reports, supporting the logistical arrangements for the workshops, coordinating with workshop participants, providing independent input into the development of capacity development training sessions.
• Supporting with other activities related to UNDRR ROA’s work on risk knowledge.
• Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Secondary education

Education - Additional Comments:

Disaster / climate risk management, natural sciences, hydrology, engineering and other related technical disciplines. PhD students who are already holders of a Postgraduate degree at strongly encouraged to apply.

• Respect for diversity and adaptability to other cultures, environments and living conditions;
• Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;
