Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (UNRCPD) is a regional arm of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) and assists countries in the Asia-Pacific region to achieve their peace, security, and disarmament goals, through provision of substantive support; coordination of activities at the sub-regional, regional and international levels; and information sharing on global and regional developments. Mandated by UN General Assembly resolution A/42/39D (30 November 1987) to provide, on request, support for Member State initiatives and to coordinate regional disarmament activities, UNRCPD works closely with regional and sub-regional organizations, other UN entities, and civil society. Its core focus spans capacity-building and technical assistance, dialogue fora, and outreach and advocacy. Within this mandate, UNRCPD advances inclusive, intersectional approaches to disarmament in support of the UN Secretary-General’s Disarmament Agenda, Our Common Agenda, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and UNODA’s Youth4Disarmament Initiative, aligning efforts with UNGA resolutions 74/64 and 76/45 and the Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) agenda to promote meaningful youth engagement across non-proliferation and arms control. With the supervision of the Associate Programme Management Officer, the Disarmament Programmes Coordinator will carry out the following tasks: A. Youth Programme Coordination: • Coordinate UNRCPD’s youth outreach and engagement initiatives across Asia–Pacific, including partnerships with youth networks and relevant stakeholders. • Support capacity-building efforts by co-developing training curricula and organizing/delivering trainings, webinars, and related sessions in cooperation with UNODA focal points. • Plan and coordinate online workshops, webinars, and seminars, including management of invitations, speakers, briefing materials, logistics, and post-event follow-up. • Design, establish, and maintain a living database/mapping of youth, young leaders, and youth organizations engaged in disarmament, non-proliferation, and arms control in the Asia–Pacific region. • Support dissemination of calls and announcements for youth programmes and related opportunities. B. WMD Programme Coordination: • Prepare background papers, policy briefs, and analytical summaries on issues related to nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons disarmament and non-proliferation, including developments in relevant multilateral fora (e.g., BWC, CWC, NPT, CTBT). • Provide support in organizing and delivering meetings, workshops, and regional consultations under the WMD portfolio, including drafting concept notes, agendas, participant lists, and post-event reports. • Contribute to the drafting of mission reports, talking points, speeches, and communication materials for senior UN officials and project partners. • Maintain databases of regional contacts, activities, and documents related to WMD disarmament, and support monitoring and evaluation of related projects. • Liaise with Member States, regional organizations, and subject-matter experts to gather inputs, track initiatives, and contribute to donor reporting and outreach materials. C. Research, Reporting, Scoping & Communications: • Draft and compile briefing notes, talking points, backgrounders, graphs, correspondence, and inputs for narrative, donor, mission, and after-action reports. • Lead the development of an internal scoping/mapping document (5–10 pages) on youth initiatives related to disarmament in the region to inform UNRCPD’s strategy and other workstreams. The document will be concise, evidence-informed, and based on feasible consultations. • Produce and update public information materials (web items, posts, short features) to disseminate outcomes of youth initiatives, including support to basic analytics and lessons learned. D. Partnerships & Networks: • Maintain working-level contacts with project focal points across the UN system, youth organizations, academia, and civil society organizations. • Mobilize and strengthen youth networks for advocacy and disarmament campaigns.
