Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Coordinator of Grave Human Rights Violations Unit, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Contribute to the planning of the Grave Human Rights Violations Unit and the overall plan of OHCHR Mexico;
  • Follow up and support the implementation of human rights policies, at the local and national levels, especially in relation to disappeared persons.

  • Plan, design and implement capacity building activities for all actors, local and national, including on state responsibility for the protection against enforced disappearance and international human rights bodies.

  • Support the Grave Human Rights Violations Unit in liaising and advocate with relevant national and local authorities, National and Local HRI’s, and CSO’s, especially in relation to disappeared persons.
  • Participate in multi-stakeholder meetings regarding the implementation of national legislation and public policies regarding disappeared persons.
  • Under the supervision of the Head of the Unit, write reports, strategies, official correspondence, briefings, statements and communications, including talking points, in relation to persons disappeared.
  • Contribute to research and collect information pertaining to human rights issues through monitoring human rights situations at the field level and from a variety of data sources (e.g. communications, publications, the press) to keep abreast of issues/events and provide up-to-date information, especially in relation to disappeared persons;

  • Participate in meetings and interviews with human rights victims, particularly victims of disappearances and relatives of victims of disappeared persons.

  • Assist in the documentation of cases of grave human rights violations, particularly of disappeared people, and assisting victims to liaise with UN entities in order to provide support for their cases.
  • Assist in the analysis of information regarding substantive matters in the field of human rights, particularly related to disappeared persons, and recommend actions to be taken;
  • Provide inputs for meetings with relevant authorities to assist in strengthening their capacity for protection and promotion of human rights;
  • Perform other tasks as required.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Advanced degree in law (Masters or equivalent), international relations, social/political science or a related field, preferably with a specialization in human rights. A first level university degree with a relevant combination of academic qualifications and experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Required experience:

24 Months

Experience remark:

  • 2 years of work experience in the protection/promotion of human rights and related areas. Field experience and knowledge of the Latin American Region is an asset.

    Experience Description:

    • Experience in protection or promotion of human rights and related areas.

    • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;

Language skills:

  • Spanish(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • English(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge

Prerequisites

This assignment is funded by the Government of the Russian Federation, therefore only Russian nationals are eligible to apply.

This is a UN Volunteer assignment and eligible candidates must be 25 years of age or older.

Selection process

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. The selection will be done by the UN Host Entity at the level of the country of assignment, via competency-based interviews held via skype or telephone.
