Duties and Responsibilities

About ITC: The International Trade Centre (ITC) is a joint agency of the United Nations and World Trade Organization based in Geneva. ITC’s mission is to enable small business export success in developing and transition- economy countries, by providing, with partners, sustainable and inclusive development solutions to the private sector, trade support institutions (TSIs) and policymakers. About the Project: Approximately 1.3 billion people, or 16% of the global population, experience significant disabilities, with most living in developing countries. Persons with disabilities (PWDs) face poorer health outcomes, earlier mortality, and greater limitations in daily life. They are more likely to live in poverty, have limited access to education and healthcare, and struggle to secure employment. According to the World Health Survey, employment rates are significantly lower for PWDs, particularly women, with rates of 52.8% for men and 19.6% for women with disabilities, compared to non-disabled individuals. PWDs also face widespread stigma, discrimination, and exclusion, often leading to social isolation, violence, and abuse. Economic and social barriers, such as poverty and limited access to services, further hinder their inclusion. Gender and other factors like age, race, and ethnicity amplify these challenges. For instance, women with disabilities are at higher risk of violence and have lower rates of employment and literacy. Economic inclusion of PWDs is essential for sustainable development, maximizing human resources, promoting dignity and social cohesion, and accommodating an increasing number of working-age individuals with disabilities. Disability inclusion, as defined by the UN Disability Inclusion Strategy (UNDIS), emphasizes the meaningful participation and integration of PWDs in all aspects of society.
