Overview

Assist in digitizing and cataloging historic publications.

You have:

  • First-level university degree in library science, information management, knowledge management or related area.
  • Proven experience performing cataloging, classification and metadata management within an integrated library and/or content management system.
  • Experience digitizing historic publications is desirable.
  • Experience working with DSpace is highly desirable.
  • Experience with project management is highly desirable.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
  • Knowledge and proven application of international cataloging standards.
  • Knowledge of international metadata standards/schemes for repositories and harvesting protocols (MARC, DublinCore, OpenAire4, Handles, DOI, OAI-PMH, etc.).

Result of Service

1) A project plan and timeline for digitization of selected historic ESCAP publications has been developed and initiated. 2) Digitized publications are cataloged in the new publications repository, in line with current international bibliographic standards and within the approved metadata scheme. 3) Summary reports on all metadata and bibliographic improvements and inventory are prepared and shared.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of the Librarian, and under the direct supervision of the Digitization and Systems Library Assistants, the contractor will carry out the following: • Perform descriptive cataloging and metadata creation on all records of digitized materials. • Assist in updating and maintaining the logbook for digitization project to ensure an accurate, real-time reflection of the project's progress and data integrity. • Conduct shelf-checks to verify the digitization status, ensuring no discrepancies exist between the physical collection and the record. • Assist with any additional digitization and cataloging tasks, as requested. • Quickly train on the Library's new digitization equipment, and carry out the full digitization workflow. • Perform other duties as assigned * All materials and content developed during the contract remain the property of ESCAP. The contractor will not be recognized in the final product under this assignment.

Qualifications/special skills

First-level university degree in library science, information management, knowledge management or related area. Proven experience performing cataloging, classification and metadata management within an integrated library and/or content management system. Experience digitizing historic publications is desirable. Experience working with DSpace is highly desirable. Experience with project management is highly desirable.

Languages

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
