Duties and Responsibilities Background

Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 100 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses, and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action, and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk by working with the U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians, and the science and technology community.

The individual contractor will support the information and communication activities of the UNDRR Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbean supporting mainly the digital and graphic design of the products, activities, and events of the Disaster Preparedness Project (DIPECHO) and as well United States Agency for International Development/ U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) activities. The main responsibility will be producing high-quality graphic design for documents, flyers, social media cards, invitations, and videos. Technical support for this position will be provided by the UNDRR Regional Office –The Americas and the Caribbean under the supervision of the Information and communication assistant.

Duties and Responsibilities

The individual contractor will report to the Public Information Assistant in UNDRR Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbean in coordination with the External Relation Officer.

The following activities are foreseen

1) Layout and design a wide array of print and digital assets, including one sheet, brochures, report booklets, social media graphics, and event materials based on the brand guidelines of UNDRR and DIPECHO LAC. 2) Edit and adapt document layouts to Spanish or other languages used in the Americas and Caribbean region; 3) Creation and editing of animation products; 4) Postproduction of audiovisual materials; 5) Maintain existing brand guidelines across all creative and graphic materials of UNDRR. 6) Assist with marketing materials and printing if necessary. 7) Assist with branding and material for UNDRR-convened events.

Qualifications/special skills First level university degree in Graphic Design, Communication Science or related fields is required. At least 6 years of experience in digital and graphic design is required. Experience in layout design in printed and digital assets is desirable. Experience in animation creation and audiovisuals post production is desirable. Working experience in the Americas and the Caribbean is desirable.

Languages Fluency in Spanish is required. Knowledge of another UN working language is an advantage.
