Background Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. In addition, the IRC in Kansas provides community outreach, education and training, and case management services to victims of human trafficking and other at-risk individuals and families are served through employment services, job readiness training, adult education and immigration services.

Job Description: The Digital Literacy Intern will develop digital literacy curriculum for people of all abilities by incorporating a variety of technologies into instruction. This intern will work with Adult Education instructors and Employment Caseworkers to plan lessons that integrate components of ESL, child development and computer skills. S/he may also help with administrative tasks. Must be comfortable working with clients from a variety of backgrounds.

Activities:

- Assist in the design, development and implementation of additional computer training curricula and digital literacy classes; - Plan daily lesson plans that include objectives, instructional activities with differentiated instruction and assessments that are appropriate to the skill level, needs and interest of the students in the program; - Maintain the computer lab and an inventory of information and technology equipment; - Provide quality instruction that fosters an academic learning climate and that actively supports teaching and learning. Assist clients in applying for and renewing benefits; - Assist in the developing and implementing tools to recruit and retain students; - Recruit, train and coordinate volunteers to provide additional assistance to users as needed; - Provide one-on-one digital literacy support for students; - Teach entry level computer basic programs such as, but not limited to: Keyboarding Internet and browsing Word processing Emailing Computer and internet safety

Training: In-depth training will be provided for interns to understand IRC programming and the various needs of clients accessing IRC services. A high-level of confidentiality is required when working with IRC clients.

Skills & Qualifications: Comfort working with diverse populations and English language learners. Familiar with basic office equipment Experience working in social work/social services preferred, but not required.

Learning outcomes: Intern will learn about the IRC locally and globally, the available services to refugees and ORR-eligible clients in Wichita, Kansas. Intern will develop critical thinking skills, client services skills, and intercultural social work skills. Intern will learn how to manage classes and supporting services within the established requirements, to provide the best service possible to vulnerable populations.

Time Commitment: For the sake of stability and continuity, the IRC asks for a minimum commitment of 6 months, with at least 12 hours per week. Monday-Thursday 10am-1pm, Fridays (hours based on intern availability)

Skills & Qualifications:

- Current enrolled or recent undergraduate level studies in Education, Social Work, International Relations, Social Sciences, or related field. - Language: Multilingual preferred but not required. Translation experience is a plus. - Cultural awareness of and sensitivity to vulnerable populations, and a powerful desire to help refugees to adjust to life in the U.S. - Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail - Culturally competent and effective communication skills. - Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment. - Patience, understanding, flexibility with a consistent positive attitude. - Engaged in learning about broader IRC mission, philosophy, global work, and local efforts. - Willing to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies.
