The Secretariat of the WTO is seeking to fill a Digital Communications Officer position in the Information and External Relations Division.

The Information and External Relations Division (IERD) works to proactively engage with the media and other stakeholders to explain and deepen understanding of the WTO's work and promote understanding of the role of trade. It creates stories and content over multiple platforms, made available through the WTO web site, social media channels, an extensive publications programme and regular briefings aimed at specific audiences.

GENERAL FUNCTIONS

Under the supervision of the Head of Audio-Visual and Social media, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

1. Manage WTO's institutional social media presence, coordinating with teams and divisions for planning content; manage engagement and reputational risks; manage content posting, scheduling and monitoring social media performance.

2. Plan social media work for the WTO in a weekly and long-term basis and ad-hoc campaigns connected to events or major releases; to ensure WTO social media presence is varied, impactful and accessible to its audiences, with a focus on younger audiences.

3. Produce high quality, accessible and engaging content in the forms of text, visuals, videos and animation for the WTO's institutional social media accounts in X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok and emerging platforms, conforming with the WTO's visual identity and enforcing it with colleagues.

4. Work closely with colleagues in IERD and the Secretariat to create, curate, and publish content about trade and the work of the WTO in an engaging manner and adapted to each platform's language.

5. Support the head of unit in technological improvements in the social media workflow, in ensuring upkeep of equipment available for such work, and in policy recommendations and advice to staff and management regarding social media questions.

6. Take the lead in producing regular analytics report to evaluate reach, engagement of WTO social media channels. Keep abreast of developments in digital analytics tools.

7. Participate in audio-visual projects as required, supporting the broader work of the unit.

8. Oversee work of other resources such as interns, Young Professionals and other junior staff, as needed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Advanced university degree in communications, media studies or a related discipline. Alternatively, a basic university degree in the aforementioned subject, supplemented with professional expertise deemed equivalent to an advanced university degree could be considered.

Knowledge and skills:

Technical knowledge and skills:

• Advanced knowledge of design tools such as Canva, Illustrator, Photoshop and similar.

• Excellent writing skills in English; advanced storytelling and scripting skills.

• Experience with social media management and social media analytics tools.

• Excellent understanding of best practices in social media and ability to keep abreast of this fast-changing environment.

• Good understanding of trade and the work of the World Trade Organization.

• Advanced sense of visual design.

• Photography skills.

• News and political judgement

Work experience:

At least two years of experience in social media management or in a related field.

Languages:

Fluency in English, including the ability to draft accurately, concisely and rapidly for diverse audiences, is required. Ability to navigate content in French and Spanish is also required. Knowledge of Spanish or French would be an asset.

Additional Information:

The recruitment process will be undertaken as per Administrative Memorandum No. 976 (OFFICE(16)/15) on Staff Promotions and external recruitment through Vacancy Notices.

The initial fixed-term contract for positions up to grade 10 shall normally be two years, which shall be probationary, as per Administrative Memorandum No. 997 (OFFICE(23)/4) on Probation Policy. For Director positions, the Policy on evaluation of directors apply as per Administrative Memorandum No. 978 (OFFICE(17)/29).

The WTO may use various communication technologies such as video or teleconference for the assessment and evaluation of candidates. The recruitment process may also involve the use of various forms of testing, assessment centres, interviews and reference checks.

Applicants may be required to sit a written examination.

Candidates not selected whose performance in the selection process nevertheless shows them to be suitable for a similar position may be kept on a roster for up to 24 months, and may subsequently be called upon as and when the need arises for additional resources.
