Description of task

Working with Communications Specialists and UNDP’s various units, the Digital Communications Officer will use available UNDP Malaysia material to create compelling, visually appealing, and shareable content. The position will design and implement coverage strategies across social media platforms, for key events and knowledge products; as well as ensure social media implementation of specific UN International days.

The role will maintain the digital communications calendar as part of the coverage for the Country Office’s activities and/or on-going digital campaigns. The Digital Communications Offcer will work closely with programme and/or project colleagues to support online reporting, information sharing and promotion of UNDP’s activities, events and knowledge products, as well as assisting in the publishing of quarterly email newsletters. They will also be responsible to provide monthly reports on UNDP Malaysia’s online platform using latest metrics via variety of online measuring tools.

Ideally, the Digital Communications Officer is an experienced creative writer with basic graphic editing skills used to create innovative content, adapted to match specific requirements of each platform and its audience, while amplifying UNDP Malaysia’s online presence in line with UNDP brand guidelines. The role will effectively support different programme/project teams in the promotion of their events and knowledge products. The position will report to the Communications Specialist, and work closely with the programme units.

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Communications Specialist or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Digital Communications Officer will:

  • Work closely with the Communications Specialist and/or Programme team to produce enriching engaging content for UNDP Malaysia’s platforms. In particular, the UN Volunteer will conduct thorough research on industry-related topics and generate ideas for new content types in support of UNDP Malaysia’s work, with a flair for producing online content and have an eye for details. Ultimately, the UN Volunteer is expected to deliver quality writing pieces, short and snappy snippets that appeals to UNDP Malaysia’s target audience and boost awareness.
  • Work closely with the Communications Specialist on the website audit and migration of UNDP Malaysia’s new web eco-system.
  • Execute UNDP’s digital communications strategy focusing on social media outlets, through research of UNDP's online audiences, organization's online reach, engagement, benchmarking, messaging and variety of platforms.
  • Generate, create, edit, publish and share daily content (original text, images, video or HTML) that builds meaningful connections and encourages UNDP members and followers to engage and take action.
  • Continue to optimize UNDP’s social media pages within each platform to increase the visibility, reach, engagement and impact of social media content.
  • Moderate all user-generated content in line with the moderation policy for each community.
  • Maintain day-to-day online coverage editorial calendar and communication schedule on UNDP events.
  • Develop and manage online short- and long-term online campaigns on different platforms for variety of audiences.
  • Provide monthly reports on UNDP’s digital reach, engagement and performance while continuously improving based on captured and analyzed data/metrics, insights and best practices, and then acting on the information. Variety of measuring tools include Google Analytics, ZohoSocial, TweetDeck and more.
  • Closely collaborate with programme units to manage variety of online content and implement campaigns, based on special day or themes.
  • Repurposes, optimizes and formats content received from the various programme to fit the website and social media platforms while ensuring that its design and messaging attracts maximum audience, complying with UNDP's branding polices.
  • Follows evolving industry best practices in web and internet technology, content management, and usability; proposes improvements and updates.
  • Pro-actively ensures quality, integrity, accessibility, and optimum performance of website and social media channels through mechanisms such as regular audits of metrics, surveys, consultations and reviews.
  • Analyses the usage of website and social media channels and recommends adjustments to better meet user needs and reach wider audiences.
  • Assumes accountability for the accuracy and integrity of content
  • Ensure timely delivery of materials within a short turn-around time
  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

  • Minimum two (2) years of relevant experience as an English-language content writer, digital marketing and/or public relations at a national and/or international level in communication and advocacy, public relations and/or journalism.

Experience remark:

  • Demonstrated experience working with and proven knowledge and understanding of media, multimedia and social media
  • Working experience with private sector is an asset
  • Previous experience working on communications and outreach that relate to sustainable development, environmental and/or biodiversity issues is an advantage.
  • Experience in producing communications products like infographics, short video clips, Twitter and Facebook posts preferred.
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, Publisher etc.) and advance knowledge of presentation and graphic design software/platforms (Adobe InDesign, Canva, Shorthand) preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills.
  • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing.
