This position resides within the Digital Strategy Section (DSS), as part of the Division of Global Communication and Advocacy (GCA) and

reports to the Chief of Digital Strategy, The Digital Strategy Section manages all global digital channels and digital communications for

UNICEF, including unicef.org in 5 UN languages and global social media channels, global digital marketing and implementation of formal

UNICEF digital partnerships. The Section is also responsible for the building, management and maintenance of global website properties,

including country and regional office support for digital transformation, governance and capacity building.

How can you make a difference?

Under the guidance of the Chief of Digital Strategy, and in coordination with Web Editorial and Digital Marketing and Partnership units, this position is responsible for the formulation, development, management and implementation of UNICEF’s approach and strategies to social media. The post is responsible for promoting UNICEF’s approach to social media in a way that triggers and sustains interactive and transparent dialogue, and fosters engagement and change around CRC-related issues. In addition, the post is responsible for all social media editorial content across global social media channels in 5 UN languages.

Other responsibilities include advancing GCA’s work on emerging digital platforms, strengthening collaboration within the division and with other divisions and offices to promote the use of new technologies and innovative approaches. This will contribute to ensuring the

organization stays relevant for a new generation of supporters. Additionally, this post is responsible for management of global social media management tools and capacity building of field colleagues in use of tools.

Key functions, accountabilities and related duties/tasks:

Social Media Communications Strategy Development and Engagement

  • Guide the formulation, development, management and implementation of UNICEF’s approach and strategies to social media in a way that emphasizes interaction and dialogue on CRC-related issues and in line with UNICEF’s Global Communication and Public Advocacy Strategy.
  • Lead the conceptualization, design, planning, execution and evaluation of social media editorial content and campaign plans regarding
  • UNICEF’s Global Advocacy Priorities. Design and implement initiatives across a range of social media platforms that trigger and sustain engagement.
  • Develop user-friendly key messages, briefing notes, social media assets, and technical guidance on social media asset creation.
  • Develop engaging calls to action that will enable UNICEF to grow its supporter base to 200 million.
  • Lead an agile, news driven social media content and engagement strategy for UNICEF’s global channels that rides relevant news waves and inserts UNICEF and children into related social media conversations.
  • Lead on all emergency and humanitarian related global social media initiatives and content.
  • Lead on global social media risk and crisis management strategies. Work closely with Media section and relevant staff during crisis communication moments.
  • Provide oversight and guidance on the monitoring and moderation of social media networks and platforms to ensure relevant engagement opportunities are flagged and acted upon
  • Continue to increase growth of social media supporters, quality engagement, and UNICEF’s transparency and accountability through the use of audience analysis to inform the development of communication and engagement strategies
  • Manage UNICEF Executive Director Twitter account.

Capacity Building

  • Lead on capacity building strategy for global colleagues who are managing UNICEF branded social media
  • Lead team in working with key staff to Identify, empower and improve the social media presence. Advise senior management on the effective use of social media, new technologies and digital tools.
  • Advise and work with Digital Governance colleagues to develop guidelines and standards for the use of social media, both personally and professionally, by UNICEF staff.
  • Provide tailored, relevant guidance and assistance to CO-based projects and help build capacity within the CO for on-going digital engagement.

Digital Analytics and Insights

  • Oversee and engage in the team’s review of social media performance and other analytic insights, as required or requested.
  • Stay abreast of research into new technological developments in digital world.
  • Guide the monitoring of social media networks and platforms. Provide digital intelligence and real-time stakeholder mapping in support of evidence-based communication and direct engagement with external audiences.

Management

  • Hire, coach, mentor and manage social media Editorial team of staff and consultants.
  • In collaboration with Chief of DSS, supervise the development of the unit’s annual workplan.
  • Serve as a member in the Divisional Management Team and in the Global Communication Team.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the team; oversee team budgets, schedules, contracts and other management processes

Other

  • Perform other digital communication duties at the P4 level as required, as well as fill in for other colleagues when required.
  • Undertake other duties assigned by supervisor.

Impact of Results:

Division of Global Communication and Advocacy (DGCA) designs and implements clear, innovative and effective digital and social media engagement strategies and partnerships for relevant communication priorities and Global Advocacy Priorities to raise awareness of children’s rights in the public domain, strengthen political will in support of UNICEF's mission and objectives, and enhance the organization’s credibility and brand.

GCA remains abreast of latest developments and trends in digital and social media strategies, incorporating tactics into strategic approaches with the aim of reaching established key performance indicators. DGCA has a clear path to achieving the ambitious goal of 200 million digital supporters by end of 2025. This will contribute to the full realization of the objectives of the Global Communication and Public Advocacy Strategy.

GCA’s social media Editorial Team management is well functioning and of highest caliber to help place UNICEF in a leading position in all social and digital platforms and conversations; administrative tasks are completed in a professional manner and on schedule and the work environment is healthy, respectful, collaborative and conducive to staff well-being.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education:

Advanced university degree in Communications, Journalism, Digital Media, International Relations or related fields. (or a first level university degree plus at least 2 additional years of demonstrated professional experience in communications, journalism, digital communications or digital editorial fields may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree).

Experience:

  • A Minimum eight (8) years of progressively responsible professional work experience in communications or social media field, including at least four years involving online media and digital communications.
  • Extensive knowledge of digital communications, social media engagement, digital marketing and civic engagement.
  • Ability to supervise and direct a team of professional and support staff.
  • At least 2 years of people management experience.
  • 2 years International and/or international field experience preferred.
  • Experienced and current in digital content and audience trends. Ability to relate to traditional and new media.
  • Strong ability to write and edit external communication materials in English and one other official UN language; ability to express ideas and concepts clearly and concisely in written and oral form
  • Experience using software and applications relevant to the position, including social media management tools, social listening tools and analytics platforms
  • Knowledge of current best practices in digital communication strategy and engagement and knowledge of best-in-class digital media platforms.
  • Good understanding of world affairs, current events and development issues needed.
  • Knowledge of United Nations or other international aid or NGOs highly desirable.
  • Language Requirements:
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.

UNICEF ( Division of Global communication and advocacy ) is currently undergoing organizational changes; therefore, the exact location of the post has yet to be determined. Selected candidates may be required to commence duties remotely until the location is confirmed. If reassigned or relocated to New York, candidates may be expected to relocate to a new location again during the initial contract or assignment period.
