The salary for this job should be between 131,084 USD and 171,644 USD.

This position resides within the Digital Strategy Section, as part of the Division of Global Communication and Advocacy and reports directly to the Digital Communication Manager. The Digital Strategy Section manages all global digital channels and digital communications for UNICEF, including unicef.org in 5 UN languages, global social media channels, and digital multimedia content creation. The Section is also responsible for the build, management and maintenance of global website properties, including country and regional office support for digital transformation, governance and capacity building.

Purpose for the job:

Under the guidance of the Digital Communication Manager, the Digital Communication Specialist (Social Media Content Strateigst) will plan, develop and implement interactive and meaningful social media content strategies for daily community engagement as well as campaigns specifically related to the priorities of Climate, WASH, brand, humanitarian and development themes. Responsibilities include managerial tasks; writing and editing; guide digital editorial processes with relevant colleagues; coordinate closely with colleagues on digital marketing, influencer and digital partnership engagement, monitoring and analysis, web, translation, multimedia, and moderation of platforms, serving as one of UNICEF's key representatives in its global digital outreach - on quality content, strategy and capacity building.

Key functions, accountabilities and related duties/tasks:

Editorial processes and content creation

  • Drive the planning, development and implementation of dynamic, interactive and meaningful social media content strategies for UNICEF priorities focused on Climate, WASH, brand, humanitarian, development themes, as well as daily community engagement on UNICEF's global channels.
  • Strategize to effectively reach UNICEF's target audiences through social media channels – as designated by integrated campaign objectives tied to the aforementioned priorities.
  • Lead on the writing of social media packs, crafting engaging content from key messages.
  • Perform other digital communication and content duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Campaign strategy

Project manage social media engagement initiatives, including user-generated content and other activations focused on Climate, WASH, brand, humanitarian and development themes.

  • Liaise with colleagues in the areas of digital marketing and influencer engagement to guide strategic approaches.
  • Support digital and social media editorial planning and processes, including strategic guidance to Arabic, Chinese, French and Spanish Digital Producers.
  • Liaise and work with graphic designers and agencies to produce graphics, animations and other social content for digital campaigns.
  • Work with the Digital Strategy Section's M&E consultant to measure and report on social media efforts to help guide social media content and strategy related to the aforementioned campaigns.

Community engagement and moderation

  • Improve UNICEF's agility when it comes to reacting to and riding the waves of relevant media or social media moments that relate to UNICEF's mandate.
  • Play a leading role in the development of our community management and moderation strategy.
  • Monitor and moderate social media channels, flagging risks and opportunities to deepen engagement, including some out of hours/weekend shifts and during emergencies.
  • Support other teams in HQ and offices worldwide on their day to day social media efforts.
  • Identify new opportunities to continually improve our presence across digital platforms to deepen engagement with supporters.
  • Keep track of activities of other UN agencies and non-profit partners, identifying content to be amplified and shared on UNICEF's platforms.
  • Support in providing analytics reports and provide recommendations on tactics to improve UNICEF's digital presence in 5 UN languages.

Digital partnership and influencer support

  • Work in coordination, as relevant, with the Digital Partnerships Officer on digital partnerships and potential partnerships in the areas of Climate, WASH, brand, humanitarian and development themes.
  • Lead on the development of influencer strategies for key campaign moments on Climate, WASH, brand, humanitarian and development themes.

Reporting and trends

  • Keep track of efforts and activities from other UN agencies, nonprofits and competitors. Map competitor landscape and help develop benchmarks across social media platforms.
  • Working with relevant colleagues, provide analytics reports to management on the amount and quality of content being created and provide recommendations on what can be done to improve our digital presence in 5 UN languages.
  • Stay abreast of new digital platforms, emerging technologies and software, making recommendations on future use. Where necessary assist in the procurement and project management of new digital software.

Capacity building

  • Play a leading role for the Social Media team in their support of other teams, divisions, Country and Regional Offices on their day to day social media efforts as well as wider digital strategy.
  • Be a key part of the Digital Strategy Section's capacity building work, with a focus on social media training and digital governance. Help create training materials and guidelines.

Impact of Results

  • Global priorities: advocacy campaigns are informed by strategic advice on digital audiences and activations; social media initiatives are fully integrated with processes, plans and deliverables across DGCA; Regional and Country Offices are supported to amplify and localize social media content.
  • Strategy, Content and Campaigns in 5 UN languages: Division of Global Communication and Advocacy (DGCA) designs and implements clear, innovative and effective digital and social media content and engagement strategies for relevant communication priorities to raise awareness of children’s rights in the public domain, strengthen political will in support of UNICEF's mission and objectives, and enhance the organization’s credibility and brand.
  • Monitoring and evaluation: clear and strategic KPIs are established; analysis is undertaken to continuously improve the effectiveness of social media communication strategy, marketing efforts and activities; results and reports are prepared and shared.
  • Digital Partnerships: Climate, WASH, brand, humanitarian and development-related social media initiatives are in line with digital partnership priorities, strengthening efforts in advocacy and other relevant areas.
  • Capacity building: Programme, Regional and Country office colleagues are provided with professional expertise and advice on all aspects of digital communications and social media audience engagement.
  • Reporting and Trends: DGCA remains abreast of awareness of latest developments and trends in digital and social media content and strategies with the aim of reaching established key performance indicators and digital communication baselines are established against; the achievement of objectives of the digital communication strategy are regularly evaluated; analysis is undertaken to continuously improve the effectiveness of social media communication strategy and activities; results and reports are prepared and shared.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education:

  • Advanced university degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations or Marketing. A first-level university degree in combination with 7 years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • Five years or more of progressively responsible and relevant professional work experience in communication, digital marketing, broadcast, and/or new media.
  • Experienced and current in digital and social media content and audience trends with due consideration of geographical and regional differences.
  • Prior content strategy/management experience working with a global organization, especially working on projects of similar scale, involving multiple users and groups.
  • Ability to shape editorial systems and content planning from initial strategy to implementation and post-launch optimization.
  • Three years of direct experience managing digital communication channels (web and social media channels).
  • Experience in enterprise social media management tools, ideally for a global organization, and measurement/listening tools.
  • Strong social copy-editing skills and proven ability to write flawless, tight social copy.
  • Experience overseeing direct reports.
  • Strong judgement in reputational risk and experience in crisis communications.
  • Demonstrated understanding of rights-based messaging that respects the dignity and agency of the children UNICEF supports.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in digital communication strategy and engagement, as well as knowledge of best in class digital media platforms.
  • Understanding of digital marketing and fundraising strategies a plus.
  • Experience of capacity building and training a plus.
  • Two years of international and/or international field experience preferred.

Language Requirements:

  • Knowledge of United Nations or other international aid or NGOs highly desirable.
