The Digital Strategy Section (DSS) within the Division of Communication & Advocacy (DGCA) comprises Web Editorial, Social Media News and Campaigns, Digital Governance and Platforms teams working together to create compelling public-facing content and to provide digital services within the organization. Through multiple platforms and in multiple languages, the Digital Strategy Section draws attention to the many facets of UNICEF’s work, encouraging public support, participation and action, as well as ensuring greater transparency and accountability. Web stories, blog posts, photo essays, Facebook posts, Twitter campaigns, and videos for distribution via UNICEF.org, UNICEF Connect, YouTube, news media and other outlets and platforms are all a part of our digital storytelling.

This position resides within the Digital Strategy Section as part of the Division of Global Communication and Advocacy and reports directly to the Head of Web Editorial. The Digital Strategy Section manages all global digital channels and digital communications for UNICEF, including unicef.org in 5 UN languages and global social media channels, global digital marketing, and the implementation of formal UNICEF digital partnerships. The Section is also responsible for the building, management, and maintenance of global website properties, including country and regional office support for digital transformation, governance and capacity-building.

Purpose for the job:

Under the general guidance of the Head of Web Editorial, the Senior Web Editor is responsible for the management and oversight of both home page content as well as UNICEF global website content, with the goal of advancing UNICEF’s Global Advocacy Priorities, communicating UNICEF’s mandate and highlighting UNICEF’s work through children’s stories and voices across the globe.

Responsibilities include writing, editing, producing, and distributing compelling web stories for consumption by the general public, worldwide opinion leaders, government officials, the media, UNICEF National Committees, as well as global UNICEF staff. The Senior Web Editor will work with the Head of Web Editorial in the implementation, curation, monitoring and ongoing maintenance of a global web editorial strategy for UNICEF’s web properties, coupled with an integrated engagement plan to drive unique, repeat visitors to the site.

Key functions, accountabilities and related duties/tasks

Web Editorial Development and Work Plan

  • Overall supervision and administration of Web editorial, including coordination with other Web editors and page producers. Identification and vetting of content, both internal and external, for UNICEF.org; planning of editorial production; oversight of editorial calendar
  • Implement web editorial strategy that brings to life UNICEF’s mandate, programme work at the country level, humanitarian and emergency responses, children’s voices and children’s lives.
  • Work with content developers, programme colleagues, DGCA, and country/regional staff to commission, create, develop, curate and/or edit content that meets the highest level of UNICEF editorial standards.
  • Incorporate multimedia and social media content assets into the website ecosystem.

Web Engagement and Analytics

  • Develop distribution strategy that drives increased web traffic and onsite engagement with a focus on Search Engine Optimization
  • Partner with digital colleagues to create 2-way traffic between social and web channels to increase overall digital engagement metrics.
  • Monitor, analyse, evaluate, and report on web analytics to guide digital strategy and optimize engagement.

Web Story Editing and Production

  • Edit web stories and overall web content to ensure accuracy, clarity and consistency with UNICEF’s goals, strategies, messages and brand. Edit for continuity, logical arrangement, readability, clarity of expression, internal consistency.
  • Copy-edit prior to production and publication to verify grammar, syntax, accuracy, clarity, punctuation, spelling and conformity with established UNICEF style.
  • Ensure material adheres to established web and editorial standards and conforms to UNICEF policy, practices and style. Ensures that phraseology and terminology are correct.
  • Manage and curate a constant stream of content from country and regional offices.
  • Produce and publish web content in Drupal Content Management System (CMS).

Global Advocacy Priorities and Campaigns

  • Partner with DGCA, Programme, Country and Regional colleagues to create compelling content, landing pages and microsites for campaigns, partnerships, reports and critical UNICEF initiatives.
  • Perform other digital communication and content duties at the P3 level as required, as well as other communication officer duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Management

  • Manage recruitment processes for direct reports, as needed.
  • Hire and manage consultants for special projects, as required.

Web Guidelines, Best Practices and Capacity-Building

  • Contribute to the development and formulation of organization-wide web guidelines, procedures and standards to support capacity-building.
  • Provide normative guidance to Country and Regional colleagues on best-in-class web practices.

Web development and work plan: Division of Global Communications and Advocacy (DGCA) has clear web content and comprehensive work plan to raise awareness of children’s rights in the public domain, strengthen political will in support of UNICEF's mission and objectives, and enhance the organization’s credibility and brand.
  2. Web engagement strategy: DGCA has a clear path to achieving the ambitious goal of 200 Million supporters by end of 2025, a large portion of whom will come from digital channels. DGCA remains abreast of latest developments and trends in digital and web strategies, incorporating tactics into strategic approaches with the aim of reaching established key performance indicators.
  3. Web editing and production: UNICEF has a creative and engaging UNICEF.org home page experience that is timely, relevant, diverse and in line with UNICEF priorities. Web stories, blog entries, photo essays, Social Media content and videos are all incorporated into UNICEF.org, in a compelling and engaging manner to enhance storytelling
  4. Web guidelines and best practice sharing: Programme, Regional and Country office colleagues are provided with professional expertise and advice on all aspects of web communications, governance and audience engagement.
  5. Global Advocacy priorities and campaigns: DGCA has an effective process in place for integrating and taking action on UNICEF’s global communications priorities and partnerships, disseminating these elements in a locally appropriate way.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education:

  • Advanced university degree in Communications, Journalism, International Relations or related fields. (A first level university degree plus an additional two years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree).

    Experience:

  • Minimum five years of progressively responsible professional editorial work experience, of which at least two years involve online media and digital communication channels.

  • Experienced and current in digital content and audience trends. Ability to relate to traditional and social media
  • Exceptional ability to write and edit external communication materials, ability to express clearly and concisely ideas and concepts in written and oral form
  • Experience using software and tools relevant to the position, including content management systems, email systems and web tracking tools.
  • Knowledge of current best practices in digital communication strategy and engagement, in particular SEO, and knowledge of best-in-class digital media platforms.
  • Good understanding of world affairs, current events and development issues needed.
  • 2 years International and/or international field experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of United Nations or other international aid or NGOs highly desirable.
