This position resides within the Digital Strategy Section, as part of the Division of Global Communication and Advocacy (DGCA) and reports directly to the Head of Social Media Campaigns and Supporter Engagement. The Digital Strategy Section manages all global digital channels and digital communications for UNICEF, including unicef.org in 5 UN languages, global social media channels, and digital multimedia content creation. The Section is also responsible for the build, management, and maintenance of global website properties, including country and regional office support for digital transformation, governance and capacity building.

How can you make a difference?

Under the general guidance of the Head of Social Media Campaigns and Supporter Engagement, the Digital Communication Officer (Digital Partnerships) is responsible for supporting and in specific instances leading in: researching, initiating, developing and maintaining strategic relationships with digital partners that advance UNICEF’s mandate and engage audiences around children’s issues across the globe through the use of digital and social media platforms; developing digital capacity through partnerships and regular learning and engagement opportunities; building relationships and piloting initiatives with best-in-class platforms and outlets in support of UNICEF’s priority advocacy areas, campaigns and initiatives, contracting vendors, producers or companies, as needed; developing, drafting and implementing an agile approach for global and local digital partnership models; and leading on a comprehensive digital capacity development program that supports the technical and creative development of team members in coordination with academic institutions, major influencers as well major global digital platforms. The post is expected to support the functions of organizational priorities, campaigns, and supporter engagement.

Key functions, accountabilities and related duties/tasks:

1. Networking and Partnerships

  • Assist in researching, developing and maintaining strategic relationships with digital partners and all major digital platforms, including but not limited to Meta, Google, Twitter, Instagram, among others, that help advance UNICEF’s mandate and engage audiences around children and young people’s issues globally.
  • Co-develop and maintain relationships with digital news/media outlets and influencers to maximize impact of UNICEF’s digital communication and engagement strategies.

2. Digital Partnership Strategy Development

  • Define and implement global partnerships, networking and capacity building strategies in line with UNICEF’s communication priorities, goals and objectives at the country office, regional office and headquarters level.
  • Help develop and maintain an agile project timeline with milestones and priorities in line with DGCA’s broader communication and engagement priorities.
  • Conceptualize, research, and advise on the latest trends in new technology industry standards, best practices and benchmarks based on expertise and available business intelligence.

3. Global Priorities and Campaigns

  • Help oversee the Scaled Support Program across 100+ country offices, including the dissemination of in-kind ad credits for social behavior change campaigns
  • Build relationships and pilot initiatives, both at the country office and headquarters level, with best-in-class digital platforms and outlets in support of UNICEF’s priority themes, campaigns and initiatives, contracting vendors, producers or companies, as needed.
  • Support and coordinate partnership needs and efforts of cross-functional, project-based teams including multimedia, web, advocacy and youth engagement among others.
  • Perform other digital engagement duties at the P2 level as required, as well as other communication officer duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

4. Capacity building and Support

  • Help develop and implement a digital capacity building plan through partnerships and regular learning and engagement opportunities.
  • Ensure teams access to knowledge, best practices and latest trends in the digital world.
  • Ensure knowledge sharing with the broader UNICEF network, including but not limited to other Divisions, Regional Offices, Country Offices and National Committees.

Impact of Results:

  • Networking and Partnerships: DGCA has a well maintained and continually developed contact list of individuals, groups, institutions, organizations and digital outlets whose support is essential to/can assist in achieving the advocacy and communication objectives.
  • Digital Partnership Strategy Development: DGCA has a clear digital partnership strategy and associated work plan to raise awareness of children’s rights in the public domain, strengthen political will in support of UNICEF's mission and objectives, and enhance the organization’s credibility and brand.
  • Global Priorities and Campaigns: DGCA has an effective process in place for working with partners to better integrate and drive engagement and action on UNICEF’s global communication priorities, disseminating these elements in a locally appropriate way.
  • Capacity building and support: DGCA/HQ, Programme, Regional and Country office colleagues are provided with professional expertise and advice on all aspects of digital communications and audience engagement.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education: University degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing or a related field is required.

Experience: • At least two years of practical and relevant professional work experience in communication, digital marketing, broadcast, and/or new media. • Experienced and current in digital and social media content, platform, influencer and audience trends in both developing and developed regions. • Prior content strategy/management experience working with a global organization, especially working on projects of similar scale, involving multiple users and groups. • Ability to shape, develop, draft and implement and optimize strategies. • Experience in project management. • Experience working with agencies, vendors outside of one’s existing employment. • Experience in managing digital communication channels (web and social media channels). • Knowledge of current best practices and trends in digital communication strategy and engagement and knowledge of best in class digital and social media platforms. • International and/or international field experience preferred. • Knowledge of United Nations or other international aid or NGOs highly desirable. • Good understanding of world affairs, current events and development issues needed.

Language Requirements: Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is considered as an asset.

UNICEF ( Division of Global and advocacy ) is currently undergoing organizational changes; therefore, the exact location of the post has yet to be determined. Selected candidates may be required to commence duties remotely until the location is confirmed. If reassigned or relocated to New York, candidates may be expected to relocate to a new location again during the initial contract or assignment period.
