Create engaging user experiences and editorial designs for global digital platforms.

You have:

  • A first level university degree in design (graphic, web, product, user experience) or related fields.
  • A minimum of 2 years of progressively relevant professional experience, with a strong portfolio demonstrating skills and experience.
  • Expert knowledge in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator and Photoshop).
  • Expert knowledge in atomic design-based systems and working with a comprehensive library of symbols using current industry tools.
  • Fundamental understanding of CSS and ability to deliver designs that are feasible in CSS.
  • Strong documentation and presentation skills, especially when it comes to handover for technical implementation.
  • Experience using presentation, prototyping, and testing software for technical handovers.
  • Experience working with data visualizations for creating interactive graphics is considered as an asset.
  • Working knowledge of Drupal, or other component-based enterprise content management systems.
  • Working knowledge of W3A Accessibility Standards.
  • Experience working on multilingual websites.
  • Experience working in a global and international environment, developing countries and/or familiarity with emergencies is considered an asset.

Contract

The salary for this job should be between 101,253 USD and 137,526 USD.

This position resides within the Digital Strategy Section (DSS), as part of the Division of Global Communication and Advocacy (GCA). The Digital Strategy Section manages all global digital channels and digital communications for UNICEF, including UNICEF.org in 5 UN languages, global social media channels, and digital multimedia content creation. The Section is also responsible for the building, managing and maintaining of global web platforms and website properties, including websites for Country and Regional Offices, digital governance. and capacity building.

The DSS is also responsible for the build, management and maintenance of global website properties, as well as providing support to Country, Regional and Headquarters Offices.

The front-end design of the UNICEF.org platform is based on a comprehensive design system – the Design Model. The Design Model is a robust atomic, symbol-based design system that governs the styles of all front-end implementations of UNICEF’s Drupal component-based Content Management System (CMS).

The role works across the Digital Strategy Section (DSS), Division of Global Communication and Advocacy (DGCA) and collaborates with the Division of Information and Communication Technology (ITCD), and other Divisions, and Regional and Country offices to create relevant, accurate, compelling, and branded editorial designs and layouts, and utilize the CMS to the best of its capabilities, to support our global communication objectives. Our design work ranges from initial project conception and ideation, through strategy, prioritization, visual design, to final delivery and implementation. The Editorial Designer inputs at each stage, and either delivers on these expectations or provides guidance to other members of the creative team.

Purpose for the job:

Reporting to the P3 Digital Communication Specialist as part of the Digital Platforms and Governance Team, the new resource tackles the front-end design for the global unicef.org ecosystem of websites by creating engaging user experiences, intuitive user interfaces and compelling editorial layouts that amplify UNICEF’s work for every child.

Role Responsibility

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

  1. Collaborate with content editors to create compelling layouts, and all supporting editorial graphic designs (infographics, interactive maps, branded content, etc).
  2. Input into the Platform Roadmap to guide, prioritize, new platform features, enhancements, and design changes.
  3. Support Drupal users in the best use of the platform components, templates, and all best practices.

DESCRIPTION OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

  1. Collaborate with content editors to create compelling layouts, and all supporting editorial graphic designs (infographics, interactive maps, branded content, etc).
  • Create front-end editorial design and layouts published on the global platform.
  • Provide guidance and support for page layouts and navigation structures.
  • Deliver (and/or coordination of) editorial-focused design assets such as infographics, layouts, iconography, simple animations, and/or other supporting assets.
  • Provide artistic guidance, and support to other members of the creative team.
  • Provide QA and feedback during site/page reviews and audits.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to brainstorm new features and functionalities and provide feedback for the ongoing product roadmap.
  1. Input into the Platform Roadmap to guide, prioritize, new platform features, enhancements, and design changes.
  • Ensure that the design model is accurately reflected in the front-end user interface, and assist in addressing any visual bugs impacting the design of the user interface.
  • Coordinate and conduct user testing of content, editorial design, and UX/UI design elements across a variety of use-cases and audiences; present findings and collaborate with Platforms Team to prepare action steps guided by user feedback.
  • Assist with Platforms Team development of new, or enhanced UX/UI design elements, gather feedback, and provide relevant use-cases for recommended usage of the platform.
  • Input and feed back into the master Design Model files.
  1. Support Drupal users in the best use of the platform components, templates, and all best practices.
  • Assist front-end design training and support for the platform’s users
  • Provide proper documentation and guidance for the training and use of the design system (best practices).
  • Providing intermediate support for questions regarding design functionality.
  • Provide QA and feedback during site/page reviews and audits.
  • Editors, globally, all use the same Design Model components to build their sites, pages and campaigns. The Creative Team, therefore, inherently supports global editorial efforts by providing and enhancing the design of the platform and its features, and best enabling editors to create and publish their content.
  • In many scenarios, the Digital Communication Officer is expected to support and produce design assets in all UNICEF digital supported languages (English, Arabic, French, Spanish, Chinese), although fluency is not expected.
