This position resides within the Digital Strategy Section (DSS), as part of the Division of Global Communication and Advocacy (GCA). The Digital Strategy Section manages all global digital channels and digital communications for UNICEF, including UNICEF.org in 5 UN languages, global social media channels, and digital multimedia content creation. The Section is also responsible for the building, managing and maintaining of global web platforms and website properties, including websites for Country and Regional Offices, digital governance and capacity building.

The DSS is also responsible for the build, management and maintenance of global website properties, as well as providing support to Country, Regional and Headquarters Offices.

This role works across the Digital Strategy Section, Division of Global Communication and Advocacy and collaborates with the Division of Information and Communication Technology (ICTD), and other Divisions, and Regional and Country offices to support the global platform and CMS. The design work ranges from initial project conception and ideation through strategy, prioritization, and visual design to final delivery and implementation. The Product Designer inputs at each stage and either delivers on these expectations or provides guidance to other members of the creative team.

Purpose for the job:

Reporting to the P3 Digital Communication Specialist as part of the Digital Platforms and Governance Team, the incumbent will conceptualize, design, and support the front-end design for the global unicef.org ecosystem of websites by creating engaging user experiences, intuitive user interfaces and compelling editorial layouts that amplify UNICEF’s work for every child.

Role Responsibility

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

  1. Input into the Platform Roadmap to guide, prioritize, and conceptualize new platform features, enhancements, and design changes.
  2. Design for, and maintain the global design system, which guides the development of the front-end user interfaces for all unicef.org platform sites.
  3. Support Drupal users in the best use of the platform components, templates, and all best practices.

DESCRIPTION OF THE ASSIGNMENT

  1. Input into the Platform Roadmap to guide, prioritize, and conceptualize new platform features, enhancements, and design changes.
  • Deliver new front-end designs identified in the Platform Roadmap (including bug fixes, feature enhancements, and new features) for the ongoing improvement of the platform.
  • Gather project requirements, estimate deliverables, and prioritize and schedule tasks.
  • Prioritize, coordinate, and deliver design deliverables for feature enhancements.
  • Identify, create, and map User Experiences through user journeys, user flows, site maps and wireframes.
  • Support capacity building efforts by providing design documentation, best-practices, and guidance for users of UNICEF’s digital platform.
  • Utilize Digital Intelligence efforts to improve and iterate on the User Experience and User Interface of the ecosystem to inform and prioritize design related enhancements,
  • Conduct user testing and iterate based on findings, including from internal and external users, across devices and browsers, across UNICEF’s accessibility standards, and aligned with UNICEF’S global brand strategy.
  • Prepare, or coordinate the preparation of, final deliverable design files and specifications for handoff to the ICTD development team, working closely with the front-end developers to visual Quality Assurance (QA) the technical implementation (Figma).
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to brainstorm new features and functionalities and provide feedback for the ongoing product roadmap.
  • Support and collaborate with other members of the creative team.
  1. Design for, and maintain the global design system, which guides the development of the front-end user interfaces for all unicef.org platform sites.
  • Ensure that the design model is always up-to-date, reflect all live site designs and reflecting not only the design team’s outputs but the reality of technical implementation (front-end development).
  • Maintain current technical specifications for handover to various development teams.
  • Merge updates to the model’s design or functionality and keeping an active, clean, and current version.
  • Provide detailed input and feedback for the technical implementation (front-end development) of final designs to ensure consistency and accuracy in the code, and thus the public-facing designs.
  1. Support Drupal users in the best use of the platform components, templates, and all best practices.
  • Assist front-end design training and support for the platform’s users.
  • Provide proper documentation and guidance for the training and use of the design system (best practices).
  • Provide intermediate support for questions regarding design functionality.
  • Provide QA and feedback during site/page reviews and audits.
  • Support and feed back into front-end editorial design and layouts published on the global platform.
  • Provide guidance and support for page layouts and navigation structures.
  • Editors, globally, all use the same Design Model components to build their sites, pages and campaigns. The Creative Team, therefore, inherently supports global editorial efforts by providing and enhancing the design of the platform and its features, and best enabling editors to create and publish their content.
  • In many scenarios, the Digital Communication Officer (Product UX/UI Designer) is expected to support and produce design assets in all UNICEF digital supported languages (English, Arabic, French, Spanish, Chinese), although fluency is not expected.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education:

A first level university degree in in design (graphic, web, product, user experience) or related fields.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years of progressively relevant professional experience; with a strong portfolio demonstrating skills and experience.
  • Expert knowledge in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator and Photoshop).
  • Expert knowledge in atomic design-based system and working with comprehensive library of symbols using current industry tools.
  • Fundamental understanding of CSS, and ability to deliver designs that are feasible in CSS.
  • Strong documentation and presentation skills, especially when it comes to handover for technical implementation.
  • Experience using presentation, prototyping, and testing software for technical handovers.
  • Experience working with data visualizations for creating interactive graphics is considered as an asset.
  • Working knowledge of Drupal, or other component-based enterprise content management systems.
  • Working knowledge of W3A Accessibility Standards.
  • Experience working on multilingual websites.
  • Experience working in a global and international environment, developing countries and/or familiarity with emergencies is considered an asset.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English is required; knowledge of another official UN language (i.e Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is highly regarded;
