Under the supervision of the Unit Head, the Digital Archivist contributes to the formulation and implementation of processes for the digital preservation initiative which includes the overall management of all UNICEF’s digital archival materials. Centered around a framework for the implementation of an and an Archives Digital Repository (ADR) and an Archives Management System (AMS), the Digital Archivist will work closely with project teams including IT and procurement staff on the organizational roll-out plan for both the AMS and ADR.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Digital Archivist is expected to lead the Digital Preservation Initiative through:

  1. Developing a Digital Preservation & Digital Access Strategy, and an implementation roadmap for UNICEF, in alignment with organizational business strategy and mandates
  2. Revising and updating existing technical requirements documents, regulatory framework, policy, process and procedure for the implementation and operation of an Archives Digital Repository (ADR) and an Archives Management System (AMS)
  3. Engaging with stakeholders to Develop a Business Case for institutional investment in the immediate and long-term products defined in the implementation roadmap
  4. Recommending the right level of human and financial resources for product(s) implementation, operations and sustainment
  5. Preparing and evaluating RFP documentation for the procurement of an Archives Digital Repository (ADR) and an Archives Management System (AMS)

DELIVERABLES

  1. A UNICEF Digital Preservation and Access Implementation Roadmap
  2. Updated ADR and AMS technical requirements
  3. Policy Framework for Digital Preservation updated or developed
  4. Business Case for the Digital Preservation Initiative finalized
  5. RFP developed and evaluation process established
  6. AMS and ADR solutions identified and selected.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Academic Degrees:

  • A master’s degree in Archival Studies, Information Sciences or related field, or equivalent experience

    Professional Experience:

  • Essential: At least 2-3 years' experience working in records and digital archives management, with demonstrated experience in electronic records and archives management software

  • Experience in digital archives and metadata curation within an archives or related organization
  • Experience of digital preservation issues, strategies, and standards

    Technical Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants with the following:

  • Qualification in one or more aspects of digital preservation
  • Working experience of digital archival standards such as OAIS and Trusted Digital Repositories
  • Knowledge of accessioning, arranging, and describing archival material
  • Demonstrated knowledge of international archival standards – ISAD(G)
  • Knowledge of Archives Management Systems such as AToM, ArchivesSpace, Axiell/Adlib, etc.
  • Experience with large scale digitization projects is a strong asset
  • Highly proficient with desktop applications such as Adobe Acrobat Professional, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and an ability to learn new IT systems
  • Knowledge of digital preservation tools such as ArchiveIT, Archivematica, Preservica, etc.
  • Hands-on experience in using digital preservation systems in an enterprise-scale environment
  • Familiarity with web archiving tools and methods
  • Experience working with digital asset management software applications
  • Understanding of the application of emulation technologies for digital preservation strategies
  • Familiarity with mark-up languages, style sheets, and other XML-related technologies, using a
  • command line interface and scripting
  • Familiarity with large-scale storage systems including Cloud storage options and alternatives

Language Requirements: Fluency in English is required. Additional UN languages, such as Spanish or French, will be considered an asset.

This assignment can be done remotely from anywhere in the world as long as the applicant meets the requirements above.

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
