You have:
- University degree in Archival Studies, Library Science, Information Science, or a related field (Master's preferred).
- 5-8 years of relevant experience, preferably in archiving.
- Specialist-level understanding of core archival principles (provenance, original order, metadata, data management, ingest, accessioning).
- Strong knowledge of data models and AI applications in archival contexts. Experience with automatic metadata generation, digitization projects, and machine learning for information extraction.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills (written and oral French and English).
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multicultural environment. Proficiency in MS Office applications.

What we do
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.
Purpose of the position
The General Archives within the division of Archives, Library and Outreach of the ICRC seek a unique individual to bridge the worlds of archival science, documentation, and data science.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Implement Digital Archiving Strategies: apply policies for digital content selection, preservation, and access, ensuring adherence to standards like OAIS (ISO 14721).
- Manage the digital repository, including state-of-the-art archival data management, and troubleshooting.
- Harness the Power of AI: Design and maintain archival data models. Apply AI techniques for process enhancement, automatic metadata generation, and information extraction using machine learning. Support the digitization of paper archives.
- Collaborate and Train: Work across teams to integrate archival and data management solutions. Provide training on the repository system and report on its performance.
Education and required skills
- University degree in Archival Studies, Library Science, Information Science, or a related field (Master's preferred).
- 5-8 years of relevant experience, preferably in archiving. Demonstrable continuous learning in information management.
- Archival Expertise: Specialist-level understanding of core archival principles (provenance, original order, metadata, data management, ingest, accessioning). Expertise in arrangement, description, and preservation techniques for digital archives.
- Technical Prowess: Specialist skills in managing digital archives and repository systems. Experience with archival metadata standards and their application. Proven ability to ingest, arrange, and describe digital records. Technical expertise in managing, preserving, and managing metadata for digital archival records including building and maintaining semantic ontologies.
- Data Science Acumen: Strong knowledge of data models and AI applications in archival contexts. Experience with automatic metadata generation, digitization projects, and machine learning for information extraction.
- Essential Skills: Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills (written and oral French and English). Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multicultural environment. Proficiency in MS Office applications.
