This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

The purpose of the assignment, under the supervision of the Communication Specialist, is to lead the running of UNICEF South Africa’s social media platforms, including overseeing and supporting digital content production for the platforms. Ideally the UNV will also have some capacity to produce simple graphics. This work aims to further strengthen and improve social media reach and engagement to strengthen advocacy for the protection and fulfilment of children’s rights, to articulate key partnerships and to maximize UNICEF’s role as a thought leader in South Africa and its presence at a community level. The UNV will manage the weekly social media editorial planner, as well as the multimedia content planner. He/she will work will all team members as part of the Communication and Partnerships section, as well as engaging with colleagues across programming sections. This work will include identifying opportunities for powerful and engaging content and will help improve the understanding and awareness about the importance of social media engagement and framing, including use of language, across the office. The UNV will also at relevant moments engage with the UNICEF regional and headquarters offices, as well as with external partners.

Under the direct supervision of the Communication Specialist, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Daily management, drafting and posting across UNICEF SA social media platforms (Twitter / Instagram / LinkedIn / Facebook / YouTube/Tik Tok); • Ensure platforms engage the public, stakeholders, and partners to highlight the issues impacting children, UNICEF and partners work in response and to represent the UNICEF brand; • Managing the weekly editorial calendar and updating the UNICEF South Africa multi-media planner and log; • Uploading and tagging of images and video content on the internal Enterprise Content Management (ECM) platform. Including content not necessarily uploaded to the global platform; • Posting to the YouTube channel with videos commissioned and finalized, according to relevant programmes and priority areas. • Acting as the internal ECM platform section focal point for Comms and Partnerships; • Supporting specific campaigns, including maximizing potential Meta credits, as and when relevant; • Preparing monthly reports on social media analytics regarding reach and engagement; • Producing ad-hoc graphic design work profiling key issues, data, event invitations and related information; • Coordinate one day social media training for UNICEF SA staff and consultants.

Social Media, preferably in the news media industry; • Demonstrable storytelling skills; • Experience with UN/NGOs; • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be an added advantage.

Pretoria is a city located in the northern part of Gauteng Province in South Africa. It is one of the country’s two capital cities serving as the executive (administrative) and de facto national capital. It offers excellent living conditions with various types of world-class available facilities. Housing is readily available, and rents can be negotiated. Like in other big cities with significant crime rates, caution must be exercised always. As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials.
