● This role reports into the Senior Director Digital Engagement and implements a global integrated audience engagement strategy. The position is expected to drive digital communications optimally to achieve External Relations goals.

● The Deputy Director manages a team of approximately 20 staff across the US, UK, Sweden, Germany, EU and Korea. These professionals run Rescue.org websites, social media profiles, create content for these channels, and lead on digital influencer/partnership engagement.

● This role ensures annual targets measuring performance against online reach, growth and engagement goals are met; directs all digital communications activity across the IRC’s main markets; and provides guidance to CRRD/RAI programmes as needed.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Digital communications strategy

● Collaborate with the Senior Director Digital Engagement in order to create global digital strategies. Analyse success drivers to identify and drive forward opportunities to expand online reach including channel expansion, reactive comms and partnerships.

● Advise Digital Engagement Market Leads in the creation and delivery of their annual strategies. Engage with national market Executive Directors to ensure alignment across local priorities and digital strategies.

● Counsel and support on set-up in new national markets as the IRC footprint expands. Ensure new market digital communications are coordinated, strategic and working seamlessly with global.

Leadership

● Provide inspirational and effective leadership with the team: develop professionals and ensure they feel supported and motivated in their work.

● Act as a thought partner in the development of new roles and functions on the team, including investment requests.

● Co-manage the budget as required and provide sign off in absence of Senior Director.

● Coordinate delivery against Key Performance Indicators for digital channels across markets. Advocate for, resource, and entrust the team to meet targets.

● Devise global onboarding standards for the Digital team and ensure all Digital Leads have a thorough comprehension of the IRC’s values, brand, digital policies etc.

● Review and update processes within Digital team and with other teams to ensure efficient and effective ways of working.

● Devise and implement global processes to ensure reputational issues that occur through digital channels are escalated swiftly.

Collaborator management

● Work with and influence an extensive network across the IRC to ensure digital channels grow and engage audiences in multiple geographies/languages and categories (ie. thought-leadership, corporate, mass market).

● Collaborate with External Relations peers to influence a strategic and consistent global approach to online audience engagement and campaigns.

● Ensure matrix management structures in place are effective and cohesive with a clear division of responsibilities between co-managers.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Skills and Knowledge

● Knowledge of humanitarian issues, and of debates on refugee policy, humanitarian and development aid.

● Proficient communications skills in English, verbally and in writing.

● Ability to develop strong internal working relationships and influence key team members within the organisation.

● Ability to work as part of a team and independently in a multicultural and participatory environment.

● Budget management experience, allowing you to prepare and monitor budgets with confidence.

● Excellent knowledge of digital platforms and channels and setting strategies to increase online reach, growth and engagement.

● Data driven, excels at problem solving and analytical thinking.

● Highly skilled in balancing complex, concurrent projects. Multitask, with a high degree of flexibility and fluidity and have a positive approach.

● Keen understanding of inclusive and dignified storytelling that champions story-subjects.

Experience

● Track record of working with a creative agency, corporate and/or charitable organisation in a similar role

● Directing a team across different countries while developing and supporting other members of staff

● Creating and implementing digital strategies to enhance investments, profile, and influence

● Experience of endorsing integrated campaigns to grow an organisation’s profile, influence, and income

● Experience of brand stewardship

● History of leadership role requiring partner management and relationship building

BACKGROUND

Marketing & Mobilization (M&M) is an international team that is tasked with building the IRC’s profile and brand, supporting the growth of private revenue from deeper donor engagement and partnerships, and influencing our target audiences. The team owns brand, communications, creative and content and digital engagement efforts.

Digital Engagement (part of Marketing & Mobilization) leads efforts to increase IRC’s access to priority online audiences, attracting new supporters, and sharing an integrated digital supporter experience. These elements are designed with the strategy of encouraging audiences to give more, do more, and stay longer with the IRC. Digital professionals include communications specialists, content creators, digital campaigners, and analysts. This department includes social media and web strategists, but work across all of M&M. They deliver to the US, UK, Sweden, Germany, Brussels, Korea, and other global markets.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

This role will be based in the UK, but will need to accommodate multiple time zones given our Global IRC community and will be in a hybrid environment with the option of remote work. Position will also require ad hoc travel for events such as retreats, workshops etc. Be flexible as to working hours, in particular when unforeseen circumstances arise which require speedy responsiveness.
