Overview

Develop figures for biodiversity and ecosystem services assessment.

You have:

  • An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in environmental science, biology, data science, information technology, graphic design or a related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in data visualization, preferably related to environmental science, biology or a related field are required.
  • Excellent knowledge of IPBES, biodiversity and environment-related matters is required.
  • Demonstrated experience working with global or national assessment processes such as those of IPBES and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to develop figures in English are required.
  • Demonstrated experience visualizing data and communicating complex information to a variety of audiences is desirable.
  • Good organizational and personal management skills, with ability to prioritize work issues to meet deadlines with minimal supervision and adjust to changing situations while maintaining focus on delivery and follow-through are desirable.
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.

Result of Service Data Visualization Specialist will develop about 15 figures for the IPBES thematic assessment of the interlinkages among biodiversity, water, food and health (nexus assessment). Out of these required figures, about ten will be included in the summary for policymakers of the nexus assessment. The remaining figures will be included in the chapters.

Duties and Responsibilities ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING:

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Established in April 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a membership of over 130 Governments (see www.ipbes.net) and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Under the direct supervision of the Head of the Technical Support Unit for the Nexus assessment the consultant will provide the following expert services:

  • Contextualize and synthesize information as a basis for the development of the required figures, including attendance at a number of meetings to help put figures into the scientific context;
  • Develop the figures from the early draft to the final version, coordinate figure development with IPBES secretariat staff until finalization of figures and deliver the figures electronically within the required.
