Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Knowledge Hub Coordinator or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Data Visualisation Specialist will:

· Support design and development of data visualization products, both static and interactive, related to the Knowledge Hub’s initiatives;

· Create information products that synthesize large amounts of information obtained from data science analysis techniques into insights relevant to development subject experts;

· Develop high quality presentations and dashboards using data driven visualizations

· Support the design and development of scalable interactive web applications;

· Perform quick data visualization studies that can help the overall understanding of data sets and problem statements relevant UNDP Nigeria teams and partners;

· Produce visual representations of data findings/trends, including those resulting from spatial analysis, and information products to communicate innovation projects outcomes to different stakeholders;

· Provide support in developing partnerships and networks, including engagement with researchers from the data visualization, information design and human-computer interaction communities;

· Support the communications strategy of the Hub in producing relevant communication material including infographics and presentations

· Participate in workshops, meetings and conferences as needed

· Provide support with other related tasks as requested by the Hub Coordinator.

Educational additional comments

Masters degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Data Visualization or other relevant discipline. In lieu of a Master’s degree, a Bachelor’s degree in same field with at least 5 years of cognate experience will be accepted

Experience remark

· A minimum of 3 years of experience in data/information visualization, information design, or related discipline is required;

· Proven experience in developing high quality data driven infographics and presentations with a strong understanding of graphic design fundamentals;

· Proficiency in the use software required to create static and interactive data driven infographics, products, and dashboards (Adobe suite, Tableau, Flourish, etc.)

· Experience in developing visualization-applications using libraries and software like D3.js, Vega-Light, Leaflet.js, Processing/P5.js, CartoDB, or Mapbox;

· Experience in developing front-end for web-applications using libraries like Bootstrap, Materialize, AngularJS, ReactJS, ember.js, or similar applications;

· Experience in developing back-end for web-applications using frameworks and libraries like Python, Django, CherryPy, SQL, or node.js is an asset;

· Experience in cleaning and processing various types of data is desired;

· Proven ability to communicate complex, abstract concepts using both visual, and written language is required;

· Experience in using data science frameworks and interfaces like SciPy, NumPy, Pandas, Jupyter Notebook, R, or similar is a strong asset;

· Proven ability to manage relationships with partners, including peers, government, universities, UN organizations, NGOs, or private sector is a strong asset;

· Familiarity with the big data for development;

· Ability to think visually about data;

· Ability to synthesize large amounts of information to create clear graphics is required.

· Conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results

· Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;

· Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;

· Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;

· Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;

· Sound security awareness;

· Have affinity with or interest in UNDP’s work volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
