  • University Degree in Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Data Sciences or other relevant disciplines.
  • 6+ years of experience in ontology definition, knowledge graphs experience, data interface mapping, aggregation of multiple data sets into structured archives suitable for analysis including metadata dictionary building and database design.
  • 4 years of experience in data architecture, data governance, data management, business Intelligence and analytics, and project management.
  • Strong algorithm development experience and problem solving ability.
  • Fluency in oral and written English with an intermediate knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or Portuguese is desirable.

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT:

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. WFP Technology Division (TEC, formerly known as IT) is the digital business engine of the World Food Programme, providing the business with multi-pronged and resilient technical capabilities able to respond with the agility required in humanitarian operations, be they manmade or in a natural disaster setting. TEC continues to increase its activities to meet the constantly growing demand from the organization and implement the initiatives related to data.

Data is an important enabler and TEC is supporting WFP activities with technology and services that provide a trusted and well managed information ecosystem. The DOTS platform (powered by Palantir Foundry) is a key component of our technology landscape providing data integration, data management, advanced analytics, and operational workflows at scale. To ensure quality implementations and a healthy data architecture, TEC requires a Data Scientist to manage the development of the data ontology (data objects and relationships) on DOTS.

The Data Scientist will report to the DOTS Platform Governance Lead and lead the efforts to optimize the use of semantic data models on DOTS and standardize ontology related processes. Working on both project and platform perspectives, the incumbent will be key to the success of DOTS and our efforts to contribute to WFP’s information ecosystem.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Foundry Ontology Governance and Ontology Development Support

  • Manage ontology evolution through scoping solutions with business owners and workflow owners

  • Build and maintain a ontology data model that is coherent among various data domains and projects.
  • Implement and coordinate tasks that result from corporate ontology (data model) reviews with developers and workflow owners
  • Intake improvement feedback of released objects and coordinate with the implementation teams for prioritization, focused on ontology coherence.

  • Manage Data Catalog and Object Explorer metadata and structure

  • Influence change and propose standards for internal data platform/ontology governance best practices, documenting standard operating procedures in the form of policies, checklists, tutorials, forms, screenshots, links to other resource materials, and process maps.

  • Provide training, guidelines, and knowledge sharing about the ontology, governance and standards implementation in DOTS
  • Perform other duties as requested.

DELIVERABLES:

  • Managed data ontology, supported by documentation, conforming to agreed standards
  • Knowledge of ontology concept and content disseminated to key TEC and Business Focal Points

  • Written SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for key Foundry Platform/Ontology Governance areas.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED****:

Education:

University Degree in Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Data Sciences or other relevant disciplines.

Experience:

6 + years of experience in ontology definition, knowledge graphs experience, data interface mapping, aggregation of multiple data sets into structured archives suitable for analysis including metadata dictionary building and database design.

  • Of which, 4 years of experience in progressive work experience in data architecture, data governance, data management, business Intelligence and analytics, and project management.

  • Highly Desirable: Hands on experience working on WFP (or Humanitarian Aid sector) business process analysis and/or data models.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong algorithm development experience and problem solving ability
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences.

  • A strong sense of curiosity and willingness to learn quickly, building knowledge and skills that this role requires.

  • Work closely with a highly-collaborative, agile and interdisciplinary team and actively contribute to the development of new data solutions
  • Advanced proficiency in Python, SQL
  • Knowledge of Pyspark
  • Working knowledge of TensorFlow, Pytorch, and Keras.

    Language:

Fluency in oral and written English with an intermediate knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or Portuguese (one of WFP’s working languages) is desirable
