Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Analytics Section of the Analytics and Project Management Service of the Business Transformation and Accountability Division (BTAD) in the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC). The Data Science Assistant reports to a Data Scientist or a senior Data Science Assistant.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Data Science Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Contributes to the preparation of response to requests for exploration, identification, and acquisition of data sources to determine their suitability for use in decision making and advancing the goals of the organization. Liaises with other team members to address requests.
  • Supports more senior staff in maintaining a working relationship with key clients to leverage the use of data science methods to support their programmatic areas through solutions built by the team and by providing communication through channels such as meetings, email and other means.
  • Contributes to the preparation of input for the design and development of data science products and provides an understanding or knowledge of the data through the application of analytical methods such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, predictive analytics, data and text mining, natural language processing, statistics, and use of relevant algorithms and computational approaches.
  • Contributes to the provision of client training and developing products, tools and processes to extend the capabilities of client offices.
  • Adjusts customized visualization and presentation products to reveal the findings of analysis for clients.
  • Prepares data sets upon request; responds to queries/requests and maintains/updates web pages.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Work Experience A minimum of seven years of experience in data science, data analytics, applied mathematics, information management, or related area is required.

Hands-on experience with the development of analytical tools and products such as management dashboards is required.

Experience working with enterprise resource planning data is required.

Experience with advanced statistics and computational methods of analysis is desirable.

Experience with web technologies, with a focus on JavaScript visualization libraries such as D3.js, Pixi.js and/or babylon.js, and analytical libraries such as JStat, ML, Ramda or related is desirable.

Experience with analytical tools such as R, knime, Python or equivalent is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
