OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The GMP is mandated to monitor global progress in the fight against malaria. Its flagship publication, the World Malaria Report, is published every year to provide a global picture of the malaria situation, as well as longitudinal analyses of malaria financing, malaria intervention coverage and burden at regional, national and district levels. The production of the World Malaria Report draws on data collected from malaria-endemic countries that together form a large database of malaria financing, intervention coverage and burden, supplemented by other data such as for example on antimalarial drug efficacy and vector resistance to insecticides. Development and production of the annual World Malaria Report are funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In order to ensure that we are accurately tracking progress towards reducing malaria morbidity and mortality we require good quality data and information from surveillance systems. To systematically track national progress towards achieving Pillar 3 of the GTS (2), which is to transform malaria surveillance into a core intervention, WHO recommends the regular monitoring and evaluation of surveillance systems. This information is critical to the continuous improvement of surveillance systems. It is also useful for better understanding of the data captured through these systems; in turn, this makes it possible to make well-informed decisions about programmes. GMP aims to conduct surveillance system assessments and support countries to implement the malaria modules in High Burden High Impact countries and the GMS over the next year.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the direct supervision of the SIR Unit Head, the incumbent will focus on supporting database management and be responsible for following tasks:i. Support database management and data visualization of World Malaria Report: collaborating with national and regional colleagues in data collection and data validation of World Malaria Report.ii. Maintenance of DHIS2: work closely with data manager to ensure good maintenance of DHIS2.iii. Contribute to the development a Standard Operating Procedure for data collection, management and validation.iv. Support Greater-Mekong sub-region Surveillance: this area of work will include development of epidemiological summaries and the development of surveillance and epidemiological bulletins.v. Support Surveillance system assessments: development of an electronic surveillance system assessment based on WHO recommended surveillance assessment tools. Document specifications, develop and test a malaria specific data quality app and dashboard in DHIS2.vi. Malaria modules in DHIS2: contribute to developing updated dashboards in the aggregate malaria module and tracker for key data quality and epidemiological indicators. Implement data validation rules in DHIS2 and ensure the standardisation of variable and indicator names. Contribute to the development of a malaria module user guide, data dictionary and curriculum for data analysis and use. vii. Assist in all other activities covered by the Strategic Information for Response (SIR) team at the Global Malaria Program as required. Perform all other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: A first university degree in Biomedical and Biological Sciences, Health (Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy etc), Environmental Health, Nursing or equivalent. Desirable: An Advanced university degree (Masters level or higher-level degree) In Public health

Experience

Essential: At least 2 years of proven experience with data validation andanalysis in relation to the development of disease-specific data reporting. Experience dealing with the malaria modules in DHIS2 including indicators and dashboards. Desirable: Demonstrated exposure at the international level. Experience of working in UN system.

Skills

Good knowledge of analysis and statistical software (e.g. STATA), database management systems (Power BI, DHIS2 (essential)), experience working with disease control financing data.o Excellent writing skills.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 48,805 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 3551 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
