Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located within the Regional Disarmament, Information and Outreach Branch of the Office for Disarmament Affairs. The Branch is responsible for promoting, facilitating and strengthening regional cooperation among States and regional and subregional organizations and arrangements, and facilitating the coordination of efforts in matters related to confidence building measures, disarmament, peace and security. It oversees and coordinates the activities and operations of the three United Nations regional centres for peace and disarmament and the Vienna Office. It is responsible for the information and outreach work of the Office, including communications and public information activities, as well as strategic partnership-building on behalf of the Office. The Branch provides substantive and Secretariat support to the Secretary-General's Advisory Board for Disarmament Matters. The position reports to the Information Systems Officer. Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Data Engineering Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Responds to requests for data extract, transform and load and prepares design document and decision support for the creation of data pipelines and maintains data catalogue in their area.
  • Assembles data sets in their area, supports assembly of complex data sets.
  • Provides input to the design and development of data infrastructure and drafts documentation and formal design documents.
  • Maintains specific information products in their area and assists more senior staff in providing information products to others.
  • Maintains data governance, protection and security in their area.
  • Maintains data management tools in their area including entering data into and maintaining the Office's public-facing databases.
  • Guides, trains and supervises other general service staff in the function.
  • Receives and reconciles all invoices for inter-library loan charges and submits for payment.
  • Provides document delivery services from sources of information not found in libraries’ collections, selecting appropriate source from commercial vendors, external libraries, on-line commercial databases, or the Internet.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Job - Specific Qualification Passing the United Nations Global General Service Test (GGST) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally administered test at Offices Away from Headquarters is required. Work Experience A minimum of ten years of experience in data science, data analytics, applied mathematics, information management, software development, database systems or related area is required.

Experience in the maintenance of internet-based information systems and databases is required.

Experience in preparing and maintaining large datasets is desirable.

Experience in providing user support for internet and software applications is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
