Result of Service The main purpose is to provide various data-driven workflows and application solutions using the latest software development tools and technologies, with focus on ESCWA Data Ecosystem, and enhance the capacity of the staff regarding these new platforms (as KNIME module for data transformation, and the geoportal module).

Expected duration 6 Months

Duties and Responsibilities Under the overall guidance of the Chief, ICTS, and direct supervision by the team leader, applications support and development, the contractor will have a key role in developing and maintaining numerous modules associated with the new ESCWA Data Ecosystem. In particular, the candidate will perform the following tasks:

- Analysis, design, and development of new pipelines and applications per the UN ICT strategy and ESCWA’s needs; - Develops detailed system and other functional specifications and user documentation; - Maintains, upgrades or enhances existing user systems and integration of many interrelated systems and program elements; - Building capacity at ESCWA regarding the new Data Ecosystem and the associated ML modules. In particular, with the foresee new module KNIME, for data transformation. - Development of data-driven web-based data visualization and data analytics solutions to support ESCWA initiatives; - Organizes and performs unit and integrated testing, designing, and utilizing test bases; assists users in acceptance testing; - Takes ownership of small projects, managing them and fulfilling the expectations of relevant stakeholders - Develops training materials, technical and user manuals; - Trains staff on completed systems/applications; - Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications/special skills A Bachelor’s degree in computer science/information systems or related area is required.

A minimum of 3 years of experience in data engineering with at least 2 years of experience in developing and maintaining pipelines, using software as Talent or Rplumber is required.

At least 2 years of experience in data transformation and harmonization, using Python, R or related software languages is required.

At least 2 years of previous experience using visualization tools and charts software as Tableau, Rshiny, Apache Charts or PowerBI is required.

Capacity to provide trainings and build capacity in non-technical audiences is desirable.

Capacity to manage a project, and establish and develop appropriated deliverables in a reasonable timeline is desirable.

Knowledge of different software version control and repository tools, preferably GIT is desirable.

Knowledge of SQL and geospatial tools such as ArcGIS is desirable.

Languages Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA.

For this position, fluency in English and knowledge of Arabic is required. Knowledge of a third official United Nations language is an advantage.

Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
