Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the United Nations security management system (UNSMS) globally. As a global leader in security risk management principles, UNDSS enables the safe and effective delivery of United Nations programmes and activities in the most complex and challenging environments, while maximizing precious resources. To this end, the work of the Department is aligned under a clear mission, to enable United Nations system programme activities through trusted security leadership and solutions. UNDSS has embarked on a series of reforms to reconceptualize security as an enabler of UN programmes within acceptable risk. New strategic initiatives focus on improving the quality of evidence-based planning and foresight scenarios required to strengthen UNDSS response in the field and ensure continued programmatic delivery and support to UN organizations in complex emergencies and deteriorating security situations. Within UNDSS, the Operational Resilience Service (ORS) provides specialist support to UNDSS’s field operations, thereby enhancing the Department’s ability to absorb and recover from shocks, stresses, and challenges while maintaining essential functions during any occurrence. In this regard, ORS is looking to recruit an individual contractor (IC) for three months with substantial data analytics knowledge and skills to work on the ‘Strategic resource allocation’ tool and dashboard. Under the general direction of the ORS Section Chief, the Individual Contractor will be responsible for the following duties: - Support in recognizing potential problems with data sources and develop process improvement solutions prioritizing accuracy, timeliness, and relevance for analytics tasks. - Acquire, clean and prepare data for analysis from internal and external sources, operational reports, risk assessments, security databases surveys, social media feeds, and inputs from field activities. - Implement databases, data collection systems, digital tools, and data analytics platforms to enhance decision-making processes in field operations, strategic planning, and real-time response capabilities. - Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns, in structured and unstructured sources of data using quantitative and qualitative research and analysis methods.

Qualifications/special skills

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in computer science, data science, business analytics, statistics, information management, public administration, management, social sciences or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Strong knowledge and some experience in applied analytics, business intelligence, information management, statistics, project management, stakeholder management or related area Strong knowledge and some experience in self-service analytics, data visualization or business intelligence tools (Excel, Power Query, Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, SAP, STATA, SPSS or similar) Strong knowledge and some experience in database or programming languages (SQL, Python, R) Strong knowledge and some experience in O365 Sharepoint and cloud technologies in the context of data analytics or information management

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
