The Division of Data, Analytics, Planning and Monitoring (DAPM) was established in 2019 to drive decision making and organizational learning, improve effectiveness and achievement of results of UNICEF and its partners to realize the rights and improve the life of every child. DAPM promotes the use of data and monitoring to achieve transformative impact on lives of children.

The Division is responsible for driving, shaping and guiding UNICEF’s evidence-informed analysis, strategic planning, programme monitoring and organizational performance management. As such, DAPM enables the organization to deliver on results in a more coherent manner, based on agile and contextualized programming process, and on data, evidence, and analysis, as well as the application of human-rights based and results-based management approaches.

Within DAPM, the Programme Effectiveness Team (PET) leads, regulates and coordinates the development and issuance of organization-wide procedures, policies, standards, guidance, and tools to strengthen programme effectiveness across all contexts, including programme planning, implementation, monitoring, organizational performance management, knowledge management and organizational learning, at all levels. It liaises with UN agencies, funds and programmes, specialized agencies, other technical organizations and the UN Development Coordination Office in the development and application of programme planning, monitoring, and reporting policies and procedures; and coordinates with the Office of Emergency Programmes (EMOPS), Programme Group and regional offices on provision of direct planning, monitoring and programme implementation support to countries responding to humanitarian contexts.

An intern will be hired and the role embedded within the monitoring unit un DAPM PET. Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Program Manager in the Monitoring Unit of PET, the purpose of the internship is to work closely with UNICEF colleagues at HQs to conduct a desk review of available data in UNICEF internal systems, align that with the data needs of Country Programme reviews as identified in the Programme Review Technical note and come up with a package of tools and templates that can be used to support data analysis in Country Offices.

How can you make a difference?

  1. Map corporate data sets and data sources that are relevant to inform programme reviews.
  2. Analyse data sets and compile a report on findings
  3. In consultation with Regional Offices and Country Offices come up with options on visualizing analytical products from monitoring dashboards to support programme reviews
  4. Provide Country Offices with technical support on data analytical products- to support adaptive monitoring

Duration

This will be a full-time internship; the duration of the internship will be for 4 months, with possibility of extension depending on performance and availability of funding.

Salary/Payment:

In accordance with UNICEF's guidelines, interns will be paid a stipend that varies depending on their location. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship. UNICEF is not responsible for obtaining any necessary visas.

Insurance:

UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern’s service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrollment in a health/accident plan prior to start his/her work with the D&A Section.

Living Conditions and Working Environment:

The intern will be remote based and work from home. S/he will work with the Monitoring Unit of the Programme Effectiveness Team and report to the supervisor of this internship. S/he is not expected to travel during the assignment. The intern will be expected to participate in Monitoring Unit meetings, as well as other UNICEF meetings of interest to the student, including the seminar series for UNICEF interns. Guidance will be provided on a regular basis.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • To be enrolled in an advanced/undergraduate university degree (Master’s or higher) in International Relations, Information Management, Economics or related discipline.
  • Experience in information management/managing complex data is an asset
  • Working on development and humanitarian programming is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

Remarks:

UNICEF appointments are subject to medical clearance. Issuance of a visa by the host country of the duty station, which will be facilitated by UNICEF, is required for IP positions. Appointments may also be subject to inoculation (vaccination) requirements, including against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid). Government employees that are considered for employment with UNICEF are normally required to resign from their government before taking up an assignment with UNICEF. UNICEF reserves the right to withdraw an offer of appointment, without compensation, if a visa or medical clearance is not obtained, or necessary inoculation requirements are not met, within a reasonable period for any reason.
