Arua, located in northwestern Uganda near the DRC and South Sudan borders, is a regional economic hub with a dynamic but relatively rugged frontier lifestyle. It has a lower cost of living than Kampala and is driven by active cross-border trade and subsistence agriculture, with informal trading playing a major role in the local economy. The city is highly diverse, with the Lugbara as the dominant ethnic group and languages such as English, Lugbara, Kiswahili, and Arabic widely spoken due to its trading and refugee population. While it has some modern infrastructure like an airport and banks, it continues to face challenges such as strained utilities, informal settlements, and periodic disruptions. Arua experiences a tropical savanna climate with moderate temperatures and seasonal heavy rains that can cause flooding, and housing options range from guesthouses to basic rentals that often require adaptability.
