Overview:

FHI 360 has an exciting internship opportunity for a student interested in growing their skills within the international crisis response sector. FHI 360’s Crisis Response (CR) team complements the organization’s development programming by applying its humanitarian technical expertise to respond to the growing number of humanitarian crises around the world—including pivoting to humanitarian programming in fragile, emergency, and conflict-affected countries where FHI 360 already has development initiatives.

Through an integrated approach, FHI 360 works to improve the health and well-being of crisis-affected individuals. Working closely with communities and local actors, FHI 360 provides health, nutrition, protection, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) assistance to address acute needs and support longer-term recovery and restoration of essential lifesaving services. All CR programs observe humanitarian and safeguarding principles, including Do No Harm and the survivor-centered approach, as we seek to understand how our actions can affect people’s safety and respect the rights, dignity, and decisions of our program participants.

Under close supervision, an Intern will perform entry level professional duties which will provide the opportunity for professional training in various functional areas throughout the organization. Internship assignments serve to offer practical experience and broad exposure to a global nonprofit development organization.

This is a paid internship with a flexible schedule based on project needs.

Anticipated Duration: Fall 2024 - late August/early September thru December 2024

Hours: Part time, 10-20 hours per week

Location: Remote (US)

Pay Rate: $18.00/hour for undergraduate students or recent graduates, $23.00/hour for graduate students or recent graduates

Skills Gained and Learning Opportunities:

  • Experience conducting desk research on humanitarian crises and conflict zones.
  • Practical research experience in contributing to creating a research agenda for humanitarian programming.
  • Understanding of global emergency humanitarian technical and operational challenges and opportunities during a rapid response.
  • Practical experience with a large, global non-profit organization.

  • Shadowing, mentoring, and training opportunities with successful research, technical, and/or program management professionals.

  • Experience working with an inter-disciplinary team implementing humanitarian programming.

Anticipated Project(s) and Assignment Details:

The Crisis Response Team is seeking a motivated and organized intern to support tracking new funding opportunities and preparing resources to contribute to business development efforts. The intern will also contribute to various project activities under both the Technical and Programmatic team in the following ways:

  • Contribute to the research agenda for humanitarian responses by conducting research
  • Conduct desk research on country profiles on an as needed basis
  • Organize and participate in team meetings and country calls
  • Contribute to program management-related tasks, as required
  • Contribute to department-related presentations, blogs, reports and/or manuscripts
  • Assist in the development and finalization of Crisis Response-related Tools

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program or a current master’s student enrolled in a program for Social Sciences, Political Sciences, International Studies, Gender Studies, Management, Environmental Science, Human Rights, Communications, or a related field of study
  • Demonstrated interest in international humanitarian or emergency programs through studies and/or work experience
  • Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas
  • Strong writing and research skills

  • Articulate, professional, and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner

  • Must be able to read, write, and speak fluent English

  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift to 5 lbs.
