This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Head of the Global Firearms Programme or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer will:

  • Support the daily implementation of the project activities and facilitates the establishment of the project in the region;
  • Conduct activities to promote criminal justice and law enforcement cooperation in the region to prevent and combat firearms trafficking and related offences (regional meetings, workshops, expert group meetings, joint operations, inter alia), in line with the Caribbean Firearms Roadmap;
  • Drafts various forms of correspondence and communication for approval by the supervisor, to support the regular interaction with counterparts, stakeholders and partner organizations;
  • Support in the assessment of criminal justice response capacities and technical assistance needs and priorities to counter firearms trafficking in selected Member States in the Caribbean, and assist in the consultative missions with partners and national stakeholders;
  • Support in organising training courses, building capacities, developing technical assistance tools;
  • Assist in data collection and analysis efforts to monitor illicit arms flows in support to SDG 16.4;
  • Support the management, monitoring and evaluation of the Project;
  • Contact and relations with Diplomatic Missions from relevant countries;
  • Substantive support in implementing the GFP’s activities in the Caribbean;
  • Support regular reporting on the implementation of the project and ensures proper implementation of the visibility and awareness raising actions, including drafting of news events, tweets, flyers and brochures, as appropriate;
  • Maintain regular contacts and support the consultations with National Authorities of the countries in the Caribbean region, in order to establish binding cooperation agreements;
  • Support the organisation of virtual and, where possible (in light of COVID-19 measures), in person meetings related to the project;
  • Support the daily task related with project management including updating monitoring tools, events tracking and gender breakdowns;
  • Assist in awareness raising on the illicit firearms issue in the region;
  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in the field of law, international relations, political science, security studies or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Required experience:

60 Months

Experience remark:

A minimum of five years progressively responsible experience in drug control activities, crime and/or terrorism prevention, legal counsel, law enforcement, prosecution, criminal justice, peace and security, arms control, armed violence prevention, disarmament, gender empowerment, international relations, social or political affairs and/or related areas, is required.

Proven experience in conducting and drafting policy and analytical documents on issue related to illicit firearms, peace and security is desirable. Proven experience in the design and delivery of technical assistance and/or policy development, particularly in areas related to firearms control, disarmament is required. Experience in project or programme management and administration is highly desirable. Proven experience in research and drafting on organised crime is desirable. Relevant field experience in a developing country is desirable. Experience in communication and community outreach activities is desirable.

  • Proven experience of preparing briefing notes and presentations;
  • Experience in drafting project visibility materials;
  • Working experience within United Nations system is an advantage;
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
  • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
  • Proficiency in word processing, presentation and spreadsheet software is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Have affinity with or interest in volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System
