Very intense Tropical Cyclone Freddy was an exceptionally long-lived, powerful, and deadly storm that traversed the southern Indian Ocean for more than five weeks in February and March 2023. After passing through Southern Africa for the second time this month, Tropical Storm Freddy swept through Southern Malawi on 12 March 2023, with strong winds and heavy rains leaving the affected districts in a state of disaster and affecting the power supply throughout most of the country.

The United Nations in Malawi and other Humanitarian partners has been supporting government led response to assist people affected by Cyclone Freddy with lifesaving needs. Through the United Nations Communications Group (UNCG), the UN has been reporting and disseminating information about the response being rendered to the affected population.

The UN in Malawi is therefore searching for an online volunteer to support the United Nations Resident Coordinators Office communications team with strategic communication as part of Cyclone Freddy response.

The volunteer’s primary purpose is to assist the UNRCO communication team in producing high-quality, relatable, and ethical content for UN Malawi channels promoting issues relevant to the mandate of UN in Malawi in relation to Cyclone Freddy response. Drafting social media messages and creating social media assets in various formats (graphics, photos, videos, etc.) is the essence of this assignment but will involve:

  1. Working with UN Communications team to develop key graphics, charts, illustrations, or infographics that will enhance the overall communication of the Cyclone Freddy response.

  2. Creating engaging content (photos, graphics, and messages)

  3. Monitor social media trends and proactively suggest tactics to improve reach and engagement.

  4. Supporting production and dissemination of information materials (human interest stories, multimedia products, social media strategy and content, press releases) in relation to Cyclone Freddy response that meet quality standards.

  5. Designing a communication plan and formulate creative communication messages about UN’s response to Cyclone Freddy for social media dissemination.

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, Communication studies, Social/media studies or any related field.

At least two years of professional graphic design experience is required.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.

Ability to follow creative briefs and produce accurate artwork which is in line with the UN Malawi brand guidelines required.

Ability to deliver products on time and keen attention to detail.

Excellent knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite products, such as InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop is required.

Excellent graphic design skills are required.

Ability to translate data into compelling infographics is required.

Ability to work independently and with teams is an asset.
