Purpose of Activity/Assignment:

A photographer is required to document the most compelling case studies of GBV in the east of Congo and the Kasai. S/he will document cases where there have been successful interventions by UNICEF and its partners and cases where GBV sufferers have experienced appalling abuses but not received any aid or assistance. The photographer will interview survivors and write detailed notes in well-written English so that a comprehensive report can be compiled which details the extent of the GBV problem in the DRC and what UNICEF and its partners are doing to combat it. The photographer/writer will be required to travel extensively throughout the DRC in the course of her/his assignment and produce a photo exhibition at the end of his/her assignment (see below). He/she may also be required to work with chiefs of programmes and senior management in order to prepare additional programmatic content. She/he will report to the Chief of Communication and work closely with UNICEF field colleagues.

Scope of Work:

The photographer/writer will play a key role in helping to produce high-level communication assets related to the GBV problem and UNICEF’s response to it, including assets which will be used in the report. Over the course of her contract, she may be required to help prepare different types of photo essays and written reports in coordination with communication consultants, UNICEF social media staff and a graphic designer. He/she will be expected to produce and edit photos taken during their time in the field and ensure the images are up-loaded to UNICEF’s WeShare system.

The photographer/writer will be expected to produce:

• A wide range of photos and captions (in well written English) including case studies on GBV throughout eastern Congo and the Kasai/

• Selecting 20 photos with captions for a photo exhibition in Kinshasa for 1 September 2021

Knowledge/Expertise/Skills required:

• Advanced university degree in the field of journalism, communications, external relations, public affairs, public relations or corporate communications, or an undergraduate degree plus at least 10 years of demonstrated professional experience in of journalism, communications, external relations, public affairs, public relations or corporate communications;

• 10 years of progressively responsible and relevant professional work experience in external communication, and in the production of professional videos and video stories, in line with the standards defined by UNICEF HQ;

• Knowledge and experience in working in emergencies in general, and in Africa in particular;
