Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The UNEP New York Office ensures that UNEP’s voice and guidance on environmental policy issues are considered in the deliberations which take place at UNHQ, both in intergovernmental and interagency processes. The New York Office (NYO) is a bridge builder, establishing and maintaining critical links with the UN Secretariat, UN organizations and entities headquartered in New York, Permanent Missions to the UN, civil society organizations, academic institutions and others.

Also, via the Environment Management Group Secretariat (EMG) and the UNEP Sustainable UN initiative (SUN), the New York Office supports inter-agency processes focused on integrating environmental sustainability effectively and coherently in the UN system operations and programmes via the UN Strategy for Sustainability Management 2020-2030 (UN Sustainability Strategy).

In particular, the Sustainable UN initiative focusses on the environmental sustainability of UN facilities and operations, it runs the yearly UN environmental inventory and releases the annual Greening the Blue report on the implementation of UN Sustainability Strategy. SUN also provides UN and other organizations with technical assistance to reach the objectives and targets of the UN Sustainability Strategy.

This post is located at the Geneva duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Sustainable UN (SUN) Coordinator and secondary supervision of the Senior Interagency Officer based in UNEP New York Office, the incumbent will be responsible for the following functions:

Responsibilities 1) Coordination and quality control of UN Green House Gas (GHG) inventory and UN Environment Management Systems (EMS) reporting, training and help desk services to UN organizations; a) Monitor the maintenance and good functioning of the UN's GHG emissions inventory and EMS reporting software which allows annual collection of data. b) Coordination of the launch of each year's reporting exercise including the management of advisory/helpdesk services to the 64 contributing UN entities (the Issue Management Group on environmental sustainability management (IMG). c) Communicate regularly with the IMG on progress in the preparation and completion of the GHG emissions inventory and on EMS reporting and technical requirements, training needs and improvements. d) Supervision and backstopping in case of technical difficulties arising from the implementation of the UN's GHG inventory and UN EMS reporting. e) Train twice a year all UN contributing focal points to ensure a good and consistent quality of data collection, and perform final quality control of the data provided. f) Collaborate actively in the release of the annual UN environmental report based on data provided through the UN GHG inventory and EMS reporting. Assist in the recruitment of consultants and monitor their performance. 2) Coordination and enhancement of work in emissions reductions in UN organizations in mainstreaming Sustainable Facilities (SF); a) Contribute to the implementation of the SUN strategy to mainstream SF in UN organizations. Carry out fundraising and networking activities necessary to implement such strategy as needed. b) Chair and facilitate the UN Interagency Network of Facility Managers (INFM), Sustainable Facilities working group consulting with members, acts as a line between the INFM and the IMG on environmental sustainability management. c) Assist in developing tools to support UN and other organizations to adopt sustainable facilities management practices. (handbooks, guidelines, reference cases, on-line databases and expert systems) and manage testing, distribution and collection of feedback for these tools. d) Contribute to the development of approaches and materials for awareness raising and training on SF. Organize training events for UN officials and other target groups. e) Respond to requests for assistance from individual organizations/facilities, including collection and analysis of data, drafting of recommendations for interventions to support to the SF. 3) Support to the SUN coordinator in other projects matters as required: take active part in SUN activities, support as required the SUN coordinator in matters related to administration, fundraising, finance and external relations. 4) Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. Perform any other duties as may be assigned.

TECHNOLOGICAL AWARENESS: Keeps abreast of available technology; understands applicability and limitation of technology to the work of the office; actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks; shows willingness to learn new technology.

Education Advanced university degree ((Master's degree or equivalent) in engineering, natural sciences, international relations or related fields is required. A first level university degree ( Bachelor's degree or equivalent) in combination with two (2) additional years of relevant qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area is required.

Experience with inventory management preparation and technical advisory services is desirable.

Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the advertised post, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is desirable.
