This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.

The UN Country Team is presided over by the Resident Coordinator and has, among its main functions, the mission of defining strategies, coordinating the work of the UNCT and sharing information among all its participants. The elaboration of joint initiatives between the various offices, evaluating the UN's work in the country and coordinating the action of the various interagency groups are also part of its mission.

Its main objective is to maximize, in a coordinated manner, the work of the UN, so that the System can provide a collective, coherent and integrated response to national priorities and needs, within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other international commitments.

The United Nations System in Brazil and the Brazilian government recently signed the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2023-2027. It is the main instrument for planning, implementing and monitoring the UN System actions in the country. The UN Volunteer will be mostly connected to the implementation and monitoring of the activities related to the UNSDCF.

This UNV assignment will support two of the core functions of the RCO, Strategic Planning and Data and Monitoring, as established by the UN Reform.

Within the delegated authority and under the overall supervision of the UN Resident Coordinator, functional support and guidance from the Head of RCO and direct/ operational supervision of the UN Data and Monitoring Officer, in close cooperation with UN Entities, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Support the development of the SDG Dashboard, a Business Intelligence application (Power BI) with socioeconomic, demographic and environmental indicators for the internal use of the UNCT to support the CCA, and the UNSDCF.
  2. Support the monitoring of the UNSDCF, including its outcome and output indicators and the UN INFO population.
  3. Participate in the elaboration of the UNSDCF strategies, with focus on the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Strategy.
  4. Assist the preparation of UN Annual Reports.
  5. Assist the elaboration of inputs for briefings, talking points and reports, with the production of graphs, charts and other data visualizations and data analysis.
  6. Participate in the implementation of the Youth, Gender and Race and People with Disabilities scorecards.
  7. Collect, process and organize data from multiple sources.
  8. Identify and resolve errors and inconsistencies as part of a comprehensive quality control process.
  9. Assist the work of the interagency groups and UNSDCF implementation mechanisms.
  10. Perform other related duties as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

data production, data management and/or dashboard development (academic or professional experience), including previous experience working with business intelligence tools (Power BI) is desirable (candidates with 0 to 3 years of experience can be considered) • Experience at national or international level would be an asset. • Demonstrated interest and/or experience in strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation, data analysis, data collection, project management and similar fields • Previous experience with statistical software and programming language (R, SQL, STATA, SPSS, Python etc.) would be highly regarded. • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded

Brazil is South America’s largest and only Portuguese-speaking country. A considerable number of expatriates lives in Brazil. Security is generally good with some exceptions and caution is always advisable in larger cities. UNDSS provides clear security guidelines, as well as risk and mitigation measures, which can be consulted at their website. All United Nations personnel must scrupulously comply with UNDSS procedures and recommendations during their assignment in Brazil.

Brasilia is a family duty station and classified A (hardship). The living conditions in Brasilia are good as well as the access to health services. The access to medical services is good. Accommodation facilities are in general good, and the choice is wide. Rent for a small one-bedroom apartment ranges from 200 USD (unfurnished) to 600 USD (furnished) per month.

UN Volunteers are also encouraged to share accommodation. Brasilia is located in the country's center-western region. Although Brasília is used as a synonym for the Federal District through synecdoche, the Federal District is composed of 31 administrative regions, only one of which is the area of the originally planned city, also called Plano Piloto. Brasília and its metro area were estimated to be Brazil's 3rd most populous city, with 3.039.444 people. Among major Latin American cities, Brasília has the highest GDP per capita, and the Federal District has a high HDI (0.839).

All three branches of Brazil's federal government are centered in the city: executive, legislative, and judicial. Brasília also hosts 124 foreign embassies. The city's international airport connects it to all other major Brazilian cities and many international destinations and is the third busiest airport in Brazil. Brasilia is located at the top of the Brazilian highlands in the country's centre-western region, at 1,172 m. The Paranoá Lake is a large artificial lake that was built to increase the amount of water available and to maintain humidity. It has a tropical savanna climate (Aw, according to the Köppen climate classification), with two distinct seasons: a rainy season from October to April and a dry season from May to September. The average temperature is 22ºC, rising to over 30ºC during the hottest period. The hottest month in Brasilia is September and the coolest month is July.

The currency used in Brazil is called Real (BRL). In July 2023, the average exchange rate is 1 USD = 4.79 BRL. Many hotels, restaurants and businesses in Brazil accept the main international credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, etc.). It is also possible to withdraw cash from automatic telling machines found in all the major cities.

To enter Brazil, a valid passport is required. Nationals of other countries may be required to have an entry visa or long stay visa. They should contact the closest Brazilian representation. The UNV Field Unit can assist in booking temporary accommodation for the first nights at UN Volunteer expenses, which can be extended or not at UN Volunteer discretion until getting permanent accommodation.

Note: For all international travel to Brazil, security clearance must be requested a minimum of 7 days prior to travel. It is required that Volunteers be duly vaccinated against Covid-19 and yellow fever.
