Duties and Responsibilities

Guided by General Assembly resolution 62/141, in which the Assembly established the mandate, the Special Representative is a global, independent advocate for the prevention and elimination of all forms of violence against children. The SRSG acts as a bridge builder and a catalyst of actions in all regions, and across sectors and settings where violence against children may occur. She mobilizes action and political support to maintain momentum around this agenda and generate renewed concern at the harmful effects of violence on children; to promote behavioral and social change and to achieve effective progress. The mandate of the SRSG is anchored in human rights standards, promoting the universal ratification and effective implementation of core international conventions. The SRSG cooperates closely with human rights bodies and mechanisms, with UN funds and programmes and specialized agencies, and with regional organizations. She also promotes cooperation with national institutions and civil society organizations, including children and young people. The SRSG makes use of mutually supportive strategies, including the contribution to strategic meetings at the international, regional and national levels, the identification of good practices and experience across regions, sectors and settings; the organization of field missions; and the promotion of thematic studies and reports. While all the 17 Sustainable Development Goals are key to end Violence Against Children there is an important focus of this programme in SDG 16. Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Team Leader of the Participation Team, the Contractor will contribute to the following tasks:

• Support the office in its collaboration with global and regional organizations and institutions in the development and implementation of initiatives to address violence against children. This includes support to continuing the development of case studies, advocacy tools and policy reforms for children’s protection from violence.

• Strengthen strategic children’s participation work, including efforts related to collecting evidence, identifying new organizations and actions placing children at the center with special focus on children in vulnerable situations, and supporting the POP – Protection through online participation - initiative.

•Keep abreast of and contribute to the development and dissemination of evidence and research on violence against children, including lessons learnt and good practices to promote progress in children's protection from violence, and use of quantitative and qualitative data, research and evidence to support global advocacy for the protection of children from violence.

•Contribute to the development of advocacy materials to raise awareness on violence against children and strengthen children's protection within and across regions.

•Support to the process of global implementation and review of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda in relation to the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals related to ending all forms of violence against children.

•Support in the activities related to the 15th Anniversary of the mandate.

•Contribute to the development of SRSG reports and thematic studies, and advocacy initiatives, as well as to support field missions of the SRSG-VAC.

•Other related functions as required.

Qualifications/special skills

Master’s degree in International Development, Law, Political Science, International Relations or any other discipline relevant to human rights. A first-level university degree in combination with two years of relevant qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. • At least 2 years of progressively professional experience in a field related to human rights. • Excellent knowledge of international human rights instruments and tools for the promotion and protection of children’s rights is required. • Experience working in the Middle East and North Africa Region and or Latin America and the Caribbean is an asset. • Ability to work and adapt professionally and to work effectively in a multicultural team; • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment; • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;

Languages

Fluency and excellent drafting skills in English and French. Another UN language is an asset.

Visa and Work Authorization Mandatory Requirements: For applicants in the United States of America, those who are not United States citizens, permanent residents or on another non-immigrant status, will be required to obtain a G4 visa. Applicants will be responsible for ensuring that they have a valid visa, and if required, employment authorization, allowing them to undertake the duties.
