Background

In efforts to advance peace, stability and inclusive development in Africa, The African Union Commission and the United Nations, through the Office of the Special Envoy of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on Women, Peace and Security and UN Women, with the support of the Federal Republic of Germany are implementing a project on women’s leadership initiative for stability in Africa that launched the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) in June 2017.

AWLN is a women’s initiative that seeks to enhance the leadership of African women in the transformation of the continent, in line with Africa agenda 2063 and the Global Sustainable Development agenda 2030. AWLN serves as a continental platform to galvanise women’s leadership towards lasting Peace and Sustainable Development, promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in all sectors and at all levels, building on, and working with, existing women networks. In addition, the network aims to increase women’s effective participation in decision-making through peer learning and mentoring, enhanced solidarity, advocacy and capacity-building, among other strategies.

As part of its communications plan and with the support of the UNOAU, UN Women and the AU, the African Women Leaders Network is developing a website. The website is being developed within the framework of the German-funded Project: “Women’s Leadership for Inclusive Development and Stability: Third Phase of the African Women Leaders Network Initiative.” The AWLN Website will exist as a repository, whichwill provide up-to-date information on the history, previous and ongoing work, and regional presence of AWLN. The target audience will be AWLN members, national chapters, African women, and other interested groups. In close collaboration with the AWLN Policy Analyst, UNOAU Communications Specialist, and Graphic Designer, the web content developer will help build the original content for the website in the early stages and provide the Policy Analyst with training and guidelines on how to maintain the web platform.

Duties and Responsibilities

The work will focus on the content plan development, web content creation and revision in English, website promotion, web traffic monitoring for the AWLN website in the early stages of its development, training and guidance on how to maintain the website for the AWLN secretariat staff who will be the focal person and operate the website. All areas of the work will be conducted under AU and UN Women communications policies and practices.

Key Deliverables

  • Develop content for the website;
  • Collect all relevant resources from the AU, UN Women, AWLN Secretariat, and National Chapters that will be hosted on the website;
  • Build up web content in appropriate style and in compliance with AU and UN Women corporate website/brand image standards, guidelines and procedures;
  • Create unique, simple-to-understand, appropriate and user-friendly content using current best practices for readability, usability and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO);
  • Produce and maintain clear written and visual content, eliminating redundancies and duplicated information;
  • Promote the web platform among relevant stakeholders, working with the Policy Analyst manage the distribution of content through various channels, including the AWLN Twitter account;
  • Analyse monthly performance indicators and web traffic and determining the effectiveness of created content;
  • Provide training and prepare guidelines on how to maintain the web platform;

Report any technical problems related to the web platform to the UN Women Policy Analyst and the UNOAU Communication Specialist.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Business Communication, News Media, International Affairs or another related field of study. Experience
  • At least five (5) years of relevant experience in online content development, maintenance and management.
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Knowledge of Social Media platforms, especially Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flicker and Instagram.
  • Prior experience in international development and knowledge of the mandate and work of UN Women, desirable.Language

    Proficiency in English is required (reading, writing, speaking and comprehension). Knowledge of French is strongly desired.
