Result of Service

  1. Building an effective programme  Steer and coordinate the collaboration between a wide range of stakeholders across regions; ensuring that MAC members and partners of the programme are consulted, informed, and engaged in its decisions and activities.  Convene and organize meetings to determine the vision, strategic direction, and prioritization of the programme. This includes regular coordination desk meetings, MAC meetings and the meetings of the programme’s different working groups.  Work with partners and stakeholders, providing technical and administrative support to the development, implementation, and monitoring of key products and activities of the programme. In particular those linked to the Biodiversity Communication working group and on leveraging the existing toolkit and available assets on this area and on engaging governments and organizations, including private sector companies, to implement product sustainability information principles and guidelines.

  2. Leading the promotion and implementation of the programme as an enabler of sustainable consumption and production  Negotiate and carry through strategic partnerships to implement and leverage shared commitments in implementing product sustainability information principles and guidelines to influence consumers towards sustainable choices.  Monitor existing data, efforts, gaps and opportunities for a strengthened delivery of the programme across countries.  Organize outreach activities to communicate and build capacities around the programme’s findings and ongoing activities for member states, intergovernmental secretariats, UN Country Teams, major groups and stakeholders, and other relevant stakeholders.  Develop and review joint products and written outputs related to the programme and other key aspects of sustainable consumption and production.

  3. Identifying strategic opportunities for private sector engagement to promote sustainable consumption and production and to leverage consumer information for behavior change  Identify opportunities to increase private sector commitment to implement product sustainability information principles.  Identify opportunities to increase private sector engagement across One Planet network programmes, in particular in the food sector.

  4. Strengthening the coordination across One Planet network programmes and other initiatives  Ensure coordination with One Planet Programmes and UNEP teams, organizing and attending coordination meetings on intersectional workstreams and on the strategic direction of the One Planet Network.  Identify and develop synergies with other initiatives taking place at national, regional, and international levels, including with the wider UN system. In particular those linked to engaging governments and organizations, including private sector companies, to implement product sustainability information principles and guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities

The consultant, under the present assignment, will support the coordination desk of the Consumer Information Programme of the One Planet Network. More specifically, the consultant will be responsible for: building an effective programme by steering and coordinating the collaboration between a wide range of stakeholders across regions; ensuring that partners of the programme are consulted, informed, and engaged in its decisions and activities. Leading the promotion and implementation of the programme as an enabler of sustainable consumption and production by working with partners and stakeholders, and by providing technical and administrative support to the development, implementation, and monitoring of key products and activities of the programme. Strengthening the coordination across One Planet network programmes and other initiatives by organizing and attending coordination meetings on intersectional workstreams and on the strategic direction of the One Planet Network. Leveraging consumer information for behavior change by engaging governments and organizations, including private sector companies, to implement product sustainability information principles and guidelines to influence consumers towards sustainable choices.

Qualifications/special skills

• Master’s degree in a relevant area, e.g. Environmental and Development Studies; Economics; or Business Administration or areas related to Sustainability, including related to Consumer Information. At least 5 years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in sustainable development Specific experience in sustainable consumption and production or resource efficiency or in communicating sustainability information to consumers is an asset Experience with biodiversity communication is an asset Experience working in the UN or other international development organization is an asset Knowledge of Consumer information principles and tools, eco-labeling and voluntary sustainability standards and their application in industries is desired Experience working with business organizations or international partnerships with strong participation from the private sector is desired Excellent coordination skills, and proven capacity to establish and maintain good working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, partners and networks is required

Languages

Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills is desired.
