Background

In Mozambique, the health workforce for providing maternal and child health care is mostly composed of Maternal and Child Health Nurses (ESMI). The increase in ESMI tasks becomes disproportionate to the training time of 24 months, the time limit for training mid-level health technicians.

Maternal, neonatal and child morbidity and mortality still remain a public health problem in Mozambique. Health systems are labor-intensive and, in line with advancing technology and complex health problems, require well educated and experienced health workforce who would more adequately meet needs.

The first month of life is a once-in a-lifetime opportunity for children to begin the journey of unlocking their full potential. The first hours, days and weeks after birth are a precious time for a newborn’s survival, health, and development.

Aiming to respond the priority health needs and emerging issues of the new-born by providing holistic nursery care that is ethical, safe and evidence-informed to positively impact the health and quality of life of individuals, families, groups and communities , and on the other, the need to expand neonatology care in reference health units the National Directorate for the Training of Health Professionals (DNFPS) with WHO support developed the professional qualification of Nursing specialized in Neonatology.

In order to guarantee its adequate implementation of the new qualification the DNFPS intends to develop the internship guidance and the teaching manuals of the vocational modules of the qualification. It is in this context that the present service is intended to be contracted.
