Expected duration The consultant will be recruited for the period of (6) months, from 1 September 2022 to 29 February 2022.

Duties and Responsibilities Background:

This position is located in the Communication and Media Relations Section (CMRS) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Duties and Responsibilities: The ECA Communications Section is looking for an experienced storyteller/videographer to assist in increasing the quality and quantity of its multimedia content production and dissemination. Under the direct supervision of a Public Information Officer , the incumbent will perform the following duties:

  • Create and develop multimedia (audio/video) content for ECA stories, announcement videos, social media videos, and promotional videos.
  • Film and edit video messages, interviews, events, and feature stories
  • Produce short (1 - 3 minutes) explainer videos, using footage, texts, photos, infographics and sound.
  • Produce documentary films (10+ minutes) to showcase ECA’s work and accomplishments across Africa.
  • Train, guide and mentor junior team members on video shooting and post-production, including familiarity with professional cameras, prosumer camcorders, various HD and SD formats, preproduction/planning, studio and field pro-duction; audio recording, including small format mixers, compression, EQ, effects processors, audio recording techniques for studio and field, multi-track and waveform editing; post-production, including digital video editing, still and motion graphics design, and video compression for multiple delivery platforms; scriptwriting, and storyboarding

    Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in journalism, international relations, public or social science is required. A first level university degree in combination with additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Experience: A minimum of five years of work experience in public information, communication journalism, excellent writing skills and in-depth knowledge of Development issues in Africa is required. Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat (English or French) is required. Knowledge of the other is desirable.

    Additional Information This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. All staff in the General Service and related categories shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of each office, irrespective of their nationality and of the length of time they may have been in the country. External candidates will be considered only when no suitable internal candidate from the duty station is identified. The candidate is responsible for any travel and relocation expenses incurred to take-up the appointment and if they do not already have the right to work in the duty station, appointment is contingent on issuance of a visa from the local authorities.
